Defence the best form of attack as Broncos down Warriors

By Ben Southcombe / Roar Rookie

With all the running with the Warriors, Josh Hoffman held up a determined Sam Tomkins over the line after he’d been in thick of it all, already bagging one four pointer.

It was 12-6 at this time, after the Warriors had jumped to 12-0 lead after nine minutes. They hit the sheds, the Broncos in front 16-12. A ten-point turn around that started with that tackle.

While Johnson had been dangerous with his line camped in opposition territory, after the Broncos got into the grind it was Hunt’s turn to show his skills. He crossed for a spectacular try, a solo effort the likes fans have witnessed on more than a few occasions this season.

The second half started much in the same as the first, with two tries in the opening 10. This time it was a double to the mighty second rower Ben Henry.

However it was Copley’s efforts to get the ball down before being bundled into touch by a flying Tomkins that once again saw the match turn. While that was impressive, it was his work two minutes later – bursting through a gap on the way to the try line – that was simply sensational.

Jack Reed and Dan Vidot lost their places in the side after a boozy night out and both may have some cause for concern after Copley’s superb performance. In fact one of them could miss out again next week.

If it were not for Lachlan Maranta’s poor showing, it would be a certainty. Jacob Lillyman and Ben Matulino were solid as usual up front. Not to be outdone, their Broncos counterparts Corey Parker and Ben Hannant were outstanding, with the latter topping the tackle count with 44.

Hunt won the battle of the halves over Johnson on points, as the Warriors fell away from their game plan on a few occasions and let the lead slip twice.

At the end of the night, Copley proved the difference. Consistently tormenting the Warriors pack in attack and breaking the line on four occasions, he ran over 200 metres and scored the match-winning try.

The Broncos were gallant in defence and made the most of their opportunities. They capitalised on their opponent’s errors and lapses in defence. The Warriors threw everything at them in the last minutes, but the Broncos held on to be deserved victors.

Some of those penalties were dubious to both sides though. The penalty to give Brisbane a 2 point lead was laughable and the warriors were repeatedly given free rides out of their red zone on 50/50 calls.

Just because a team gets more penalties doesn't always mean they are more favoured. Maybe, just maybe, the teams giving away the penalties should simply be more disciplined? Broncos were great defensively with the Warriors lacking enthusiasm during that middle period of the game, really needed to convert their chances better.

No coincidence that Maranta was solid as a rock under the highball yesterday and Broncs win a close one, whereas Barba drops a combined three bombs in the games against Sharks and Panthers, all of which lead to tries and four points gone begging. Please coach Griffin, PLEASE, do not put Barba back in the rear in defence if Brisbane are to be any hope to be there and do something in September.

They were checking Parkers eye socket on field, a recent injury that's very easy to break again (similar to collarbones.) although I think it was quite odd he wasn't given a concussion test as well after he lined up at marker after giving away a penalty. Hurrel ran into dale Copley and knocked himself out. Probably the funniest thing I've seen him do apart from that "private" video. Just kidding though lol hope he's all ok. Great player now that he has consistency about him.

You're right guys. Maranta was super under the high ball. When i wrote it I cut that sentence on maranta short and forgot to go back to it. His attacking effort wasn't poor, rather he had limited opportunities and was shut down with little room to move. Thanks for the feedback. In future i'll make sure i read over it before submitting.

Warriors had more penalties then the Broncos so I would say the Warriors were the team favored. Go watch the game again.

You're right, Maranta was good under the high ball. I cut that sentence short and forgot to come back to it. On closer review of his performance, his attack wasn't poor, instead he had limited opportunities. Thank you for the feedback guys. In future i'll make sure I proof read before submitting.

I don't know what game you were watching, Mike, but Broncos were definitely hard done by and not favoured in the penalty count. https://matchcentre.nrl.com/match#/match/2014/9135/91351905/ it would have been 3-0 by the time we got our first penalty. There were a few dodgy strip penalties there

What happened to Hurrel, chasing a bomb & gets Ko'd, Warriors no good after he went off, interesting to see what happened. Corey Parker no concussion test, then next tackle is a try saving one, every team that play the Broncos at Suncorp are behind the 8 ball with penalties.

Copley showed last night he is what he was throughout the 20s a left center who can break the line. Reed is great defensively but doesn't provide much in attack he just doesn't have the pace. Maranta was great under the high ball an should he retained as well. Perhaps reed on the bench to play some minutes in the forwards an cover a back line injury.

Maranta poor showing? What game are you referring to? Last night he was exceptional under the high ball with four takes that even the Warriors coach complimented. He was simply wonderful and saved the Broncos another loss. Oats will return but on the performance of Copley, Kahou and Maranta and despite Vidot's previous form Griffin may decide to let a winning team remain that way.
