Jack Trengove a prime target for the Crows

By Ross Biris / Roar Rookie

If the Adelaide Football Club haven’t shown interest in Melbourne’s Jack Trengove during the upcoming 2014 trade period, they have not been doing their homework.

Currently injured and out for the remainder of the season with a navicular injury, former Sturt young gun and number two draft pick Trengove is yet to set the AFL world on fire.

Trengove is a classy ball user with a wealth of leadership experience, having been a former co-captain of the Melbourne Football Club.

There is no doubt that if Trengove can discover the consistency and continuity required to excel at AFL level, then he can prove an invaluable asset to an Adelaide Crows side in desperate need of greater midfield depth.

Traditionally, players of Trengove’s talent can prove quite difficult to obtain, especially for a side such as Adelaide, who have been dealt with severe draft restrictions in recent years. However, if ever there was a time to make a play for Trengove, it is now.

Only 22 years old and contracted until the end of the 2015 season, Melbourne must nevertheless be concerned with the question marks lingering over Trengove. If there is one thing that the injury interrupted career of talented Western Bulldogs player Shaun Higgins has taught us, it’s that navicular injuries can carry long term risks. Melbourne should consider all offers for Trengove before the 2015 free agency period, and with it, the temptation of a go-home factor.

Adelaide could do with another classy ball winner who can also deal damage to opposition teams on the outside, while Melbourne, currently in the midst of a major rebuild, could do with more draft picks to satisfy other requirements.

With Adelaide set to resume the first and second rounds in the upcoming 2014 draft, one could assume that a first round pick and/or a speedy midfielder in the mould of a Jarryd Lyons or Brodie Martin may just be enough to secure the services of the talented young South Australian.

The time is now for the Crows to negotiate terms with Melbourne to secure the services of talented youngster Trengove, just as the time is now for the Melbourne to cut their losses with Trengove and seek a trade with Adelaide for much-needed draft picks.

NOT in need of more midfielders. Add the 22 yo Brodie Smith to the list already mentioned and you're doing fine. Adelaide need someone to take J-pod's and Truck's place more than mids. A big back with speed/intensity. A ruck who can cut the mustard so Jenkins does not have to leave the forward line, especially if Jacobs is injured. Thompson and Hartigan are coming on but neither are key position players yet. The Crows have depth such that you wonder who will be left out as the team progresses. The real issue for the Crows at the moment is consistent skills, and perhaps better immediate spread. Perhaps Ross is Trengove's agent, or a Port supporter? :)

Gavin, having watched trengove come through the sanfl as a young kid, I know of the great talent and potential this kid has. He is no doubt a future leader. Also, he's currently in that age bracket of 22-25 (the premiership age bracket) with plenty of games behind him and leadership experience. He's the perfect player to go for if beginning a tilt for a premiership. Fair enough the crows probably aren't in 'desperate' need of greater midfield depth, but a player such as Trengove's talent would certainly slot in nicely, especially with Thompson getting by.

Dont know if they should get rid of Dawes and Watts Bob,they need someone to kick goals. Maybe Melbourne should go after some of those GWS minnows that may want to play in front of better crowds than 8000.

MFC should rid themselves of Tremgrove Frawley Dawes Pederson Watts who may provide much better options. Frawleys body language says he's made up his mind to go and Roos should recognise this and not play him. As as MFC member it's time the club woke up and recruit better long term players

Interesting article mate. I hadn't thought of him as a pick. I would have thought that there would be no point in trading Lyons or Martin for trengrove as it woul be like for like and at least Lyons and and especially Martins is proven. I also feel like Adelaide's midfield depth is pretty solid with Griggs, m.crouch, Lyons, Ellis yolmen, Atkins and now laird and Martin playing through there. I'm gonna be so annoyed if we let Luke Thompson continue to waste away in the sanfl or worse be traded.
