South Sydney Rabbitohs players are hopeful that halfback Adam Reynolds will stay at the NRL club, despite rumours about a possible move.

Centre David Tyrell said that he hopes his good mate Reynolds would stay with Rabbitohs, as speculation surrounding the halfback continues to swirl. Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire has been interchanging Reynolds and young gun Luke Keary in the last few rounds.

However with five-eighth and club favourite John Sutton safe from being replaced, it is widely considered that the team simply can’t have both Reynolds and Keary. With Souths failing to deliver a long-awaited premiership in the last two seasons with Reynolds at the helm, it seems it’s just a matter of time before Keary is given his chance to call the shots.

When Souths rake and New Zealand international Issac Luke was asked whether he thought Reynolds would stay with the club, Luke quipped, “He’d better.”

“Obviously I would love him to stay here,” Luke said. “But at the moment I know he’s only worried about Canberra this weekend and training.”

Luke even said that he was feeling the pressure from Keary and that he welcomed the healthy competition for spots within the club.

Macguire stated that his intention earlier in the season was to have Keary and Reynolds as half partners and Sutton at lock, but when Keary was ruled out for the first few months of the season with a pectoral injury and Sutton playing fairly ordinary in the forwards, that idea went out the window.

Tyrell says the ability to have Keary coming off the bench is definitely an ace up the team’s sleeve, but with both playmakers able to be a starting half at most clubs in the NRL, it would be unlikely that either would be willing to play second fiddle to the other.

When asked whether the squad had to pick Reynolds up after the halfback had expressed his disappointment to the media about being subbed off, interchange player Joe Picker insisted that wasn’t the case.

“He’s [Reynolds] been fine. When you look at the bench you’ve got Keary on the bench and either him or Sutto [Sutton] were going to come off.” Picker went on to say it was unreal that they had Sutton, Keary and Reynolds at their disposal.

Keary showed what he could offer when he set up a try on his first touch of the ball against Parramatta last round. Tyrell said the x-factor Keary provided went hand-in-hand with the platform of the game that Reynolds had set up and that it is clear the Rabbitohs team wants to keep both players on board and interchange between the two.

A win on Monday night at Canberra over the Raiders would move the Rabbitohs up to second place on the ladder with six games remaining in the season.
