Greg Inglis comes back to haunt Broncos

By Steve Zemek / Wire

Greg Inglis put on a masterclass to lead South Sydney to a 42-16 win over Brisbane at ANZ Stadium on Thursday night, reaffirming the Rabbitohs’ premiership favouritism.

Inglis scored three tries as Souths temporarily jumped to the top of the NRL ladder and all but extinguished the Broncos’ top-eight hopes.

Three years ago, Inglis famously reneged on a handshake deal to join the Broncos on a two-year, $1.2 million deal and signed with the Rabbitohs.

Broncos fans would have been shaking their heads in frustration and wondering what could have been after Inglis was at his devastating best in front of a crowd of 14,092.

Brisbane’s loss was compounded when fullback Josh Hoffman suffered a suspected broken leg in the second half.

The Broncos must win their last three regular-season games and hope other results go their way if they want to avoid missing the finals for a second straight year.

Brisbane struck first when Ben Hunt dabbed through a daft grubber for Justin Hodges, who was a late inclusion after recovering from a hamstring strain.

Inglis then proceeded to break the game open and the Rabbitohs went on a rampage for the rest of the first half, putting on four tries in 17 minutes.

The Rabbitohs evened it up when Inglis hit the line at pace and carried several Broncos over with him.

He then touched the ball twice for one of the tries of the year. After regathering a perfect Adam Reynolds chip, he ran over Hoffman, offloaded to Sam Burgess before backing up to score beside the posts.

Chris McQueen regathered a loose ball close to the line for a touchdown and, three minutes later, former Broncos premiership winner Lote Tuqiri snatched up the ball when Daniel Vidot fumbled a Souths bomb.

Souths carried a 24-6 lead into halftime as the Broncos botched several chances inside the Rabbitohs’ 20-metre zone on both sides of the break.

Brisbane reduced the deficit to 12 when Sam Thaiday charged over.

However, they were guilty of bombing a number of prime opportunities, including one in which Vidot spilled the ball with the line open.

When Inglis crossed for his hat-trick in the 64th minute, the win was sealed before the Rabbitohs put the cherry on top with four-pointers to Luke Keary and Kirisome Auva’a.

Brisbane scored a consolation try late in the match through Jack Reed.

The Rabbitohs will have a nervous wait during the week after McQueen was put on report for a high shot on Josh McGuire and Ben Te’o was cited for a chicken wing tackle on Thaiday.

johnnno1 as the others said here 'What a boring response.." "Wow someone with tunnel vision & blinkers" you must be kidding. What about the favouritism that the Broncos have received year in and year out at the beginning when the Broncos joined the competition they were consistently given outrageous free kicks by referees that even the great Jack Gibson had an unforgettable saying about one of them..“I think he must have an egg-timer - every four minutes, he blows the whistle.” On Queensland referee Barry Gomersall, lol we the South Sydney supporters have put up with allot of disappointments over the years and for you to come up with sort of a post it's just ridiculous and what tunnel vision with blinkers on.

Only boring because its true. Only thing more boring is someone who wheels out irrelevant nonsense from 20 years ago. You were booted out of the comp for the same reason the labour party lost the election. You were too busy fighting among yourselves. Manly were forced to merge with the bears and disappeared for a few years but you don't find us whingeing about it.

What a boring response.. Everyone said this last year as well. I suppose we had a leg up from officials when booted from the NRL and collecting multiple wooden spoons in the 90s and early 2000s as well? Some ppl really wheel out some ridiculous comments

Another match where the bunnies had a leg up with standing offside all night while the refs presided over wrestle mania. Now that SBW has hinted at returning to the NRL at some point, he will toddy greenbergs favourite son again. Get set for teo to escape serious punishment for the chicken wing and full speed ahead for the NRLs fantasy bums on seats money maker - roosters v bunnies GF. The rest of us can go hang I imagine.
