Horne: We don't play for draws

By Adrian Warren / Wire

Wallabies back Rob Horne says rugby is in the business of producing results and wants to see a tie-breaker to avoid stalemates like the one against New Zealand last weekend.

In the opening Bledisloe Cup and Rugby Championship game, the trans-Tasman rivals slugged their way to a 12-12 draw at ANZ Stadium.

“When the fulltime siren went and the game was over I think both sides just sort of looked at each other and said “is that it?’” Horne said.

“It was a really strange feeling. I don’t make any decisions in world rugby but I’m not sure if ending on draws is the best way of moving forward, but it was certainly a strange feeling.

“I feel like there needs to be a result. 68,000 people turned up to see a result and they didn’t get to see that.

“Whatever it is, extra-time, golden point, a drop goal, kick-offs, whatever, I feel like there needs to be a result, because that’s what we’re in the business of, results.

“If that didn’t matter, then they wouldn’t keep score.”

Horne made his first Test start in two years in last Saturday’s game.

After previously playing internationals at inside and outside centre, Horne lined up on the wing, a position his NSW Waratahs coach Michael Cheika suggested he try during the Super Rugby pre-season.

Horne said that utility value had been hugely important in securing a place in the Wallabies squad this year.

“With the players we have and the depth we have, I couldn’t imagine I would be back in the side without having that versatility,” Horne said.

“I managed to get a bench spot during that June series (against France) purely based on that, I could cover those (three) positions.”

While Australia didn’t manage a try last weekend, Horne felt their backline had plenty of scoring potential.

“We created a lot actually,” Horne said.

“I think I draw heart from that in those conditions, that we played a fair bit more rugby than they did and I think moving forward, conditions permitted, we can do some damage.

Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie has offered no clues to possible team changes for Saturday’s return clash in Auckland and whether he could bring in Bernard Foley for Kurtley Beale at five-eighth.

Centre Matt Toomua and halfback Nic White had corks and No.8 Wycliff Palu suffered a head knock, but all are expected to be available.

Horne played well. Strong running game. Got over the advantage line and didn't kick. Pity ABs played a negative spoiling game.

U Aussies are pathetic one draw and all of a sudden use want to change every rule in rugby who do use think you are? A draws a draw and I wonder if it were the ABs deep in the Aussie 22 if the Aussies would be making these pathetic suggestions it was you're own inability to get points on the board that cost u 60mins v 14 men and still couldn't score u losers

Unusually I have a good feeling about Saturday's game -I think we are going to win :-) - Mr Hansen is not his usually arrogantly smug self lately either

I like his attitude. But the answer to that hollow feeling is: ensure that you never feel it again!

He wants a result There was a result it was a draw. I totally disagree with Horne. This is one of 3 tests. There are still 2 more tests to decide the victor. Sure it makes it harder for the Ozzies to take the Cup but that is what happens when you are challenging.

Disagree in terms of the tournament, which is set up to cover for draws. A world cup knockout however, doesn't, so a coin toss approach needs to be there by necessity. If Horne wants wins, then win, simple as that. And when they bring in coin toss like answers they get liked even less- the heart ache of a penalty shoot out in Football etc. We had draws in the sxv, we've had then for over 100 years. Get over it I say and win the tournament instead. Horne isnt speaking for the 68,000, hes thinking about his own and his teams own feelings after the match, otherwise he would have advocated the same droing the sxv, which had plenty of draws, never once raising the issue.

Well maybe they should have gone for a Field goal...... Wonder if Horne understands the concept of what a Tournament is ...... cause https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmIzYvh9Dys As for the RC, a draw is a perfectly reasonable result. There really was no excuse that Oz did not have a crack with a field goal.

easy Horney: “Whatever it is, extra-time, golden point, a drop goal, kick-offs, whatever" remove kick-offs and drop goal. it's a team game and should be decided by a team effort, not the individual skills of 1/15th of the team. personally, i like an extra 10mins extra time each way. could even spice it up by removing 3 players of each teams' choice to make is 12 v 12. surely one of the teams would outscore the other with the extra space and everyone buggered...
