Australian sport has one giant problem. We are sexist. I could skirt around the issue and say that there is a greater level of equality than ever before, but that’s rubbish.
On Sunday I watched the morning news, telling me Casey Dellacqua made the round of 16 at the US Open.
The two major free-to-air networks in Sydney covered their weekend sport with a mind-boggling one-shot highlight reel of Dellacqua’s match.
One shot. Match point. That was the 8am bulletin. By 9am it had been scrubbed altogether.
Compared to Nick Kyrgios, who has been doing outstandingly well in his debut season on tour, the attention given to Casey’s triumph is terrible. He dominates news bulletins and newspaper headlines.
Dellacqua struggles to receive appropriate media attention because sex sells. If she was more ‘media-friendly’ – more Sharapova-esque – would she garner more attention?
Is it because she doesn’t fit the mould of what the media defines as an attractive female? I could be more controversial and wonder if it’s because she’s homosexual and it’s a reflection of our homophobic society?
Sadly, sex sells. What a joke.
