Dellacqua's disgraceful treatment speaks volumes for Aussie sport

By Sporting Tragic / Roar Pro

Australian sport has one giant problem. We are sexist. I could skirt around the issue and say that there is a greater level of equality than ever before, but that’s rubbish.

On Sunday I watched the morning news, telling me Casey Dellacqua made the round of 16 at the US Open.

The two major free-to-air networks in Sydney covered their weekend sport with a mind-boggling one-shot highlight reel of Dellacqua’s match.

One shot. Match point. That was the 8am bulletin. By 9am it had been scrubbed altogether.

Compared to Nick Kyrgios, who has been doing outstandingly well in his debut season on tour, the attention given to Casey’s triumph is terrible. He dominates news bulletins and newspaper headlines.

Dellacqua struggles to receive appropriate media attention because sex sells. If she was more ‘media-friendly’ – more Sharapova-esque – would she garner more attention?

Is it because she doesn’t fit the mould of what the media defines as an attractive female? I could be more controversial and wonder if it’s because she’s homosexual and it’s a reflection of our homophobic society?

Sadly, sex sells. What a joke.

For what it’s worth, good luck to Casey in the fourth round.

complaiing about lack of media coverage is a waste of time. Casey is a decent plodder but hardly the excitement machine like young nick who beat Rafa recently

Davenport did, as did Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. Yes it's cynical but sex sells, for women. Women are treated far harsher, about there good looks or average looks than men. Men who look good still get benefits, but often they must be a top 10 player to get that, get ahead based on looks. Women can be hot and if there ranked 100, they will get marketing. Far more people in the World have heard of Kournikova than Davenport. Sabatini was another hot player, who did win a few slams and was a consistent top 5 player, but she made far more money out of endorsements than her tennis career achievements deserved. Mark Phillipousous, had the look but when fit he was a top 10 player, and has as much natural ability as anyone out there. If Scud was just a tour journeyman a top 30-50 player eg Scott Draper, or Wayne Arthurs standard, no one would care if Scud had the look. Scud got a lot of endorsments, but he was a top 10 player, and had serious natural talent, he blew Sampras away in straight sets. And was seen as a future no 1, but injuries ruined him. Rafter got alot of endorsements, but he did make no 1, and won a few slams. Alicia Molik is good looking, she got far more endorsements, than her tennis career achievements, as she was hot. Men have to have more ability to get endorsements, women only need to be tour journeyman equivalent and hot eg top 50-100, then the big endorsement money comes in.

Exactly Mark. Women's tennis is utter tripe. I can't think of a high profile sport where there is a bigger gulf between men and women than tennis. Still some people get exited at the occasional glimpse of someone's undies. Pathetic!!

I think Lindsay Davenport had the same issue and she was no.1 in her sport in the late nineties, the media focused on the PYT's that she beat, rather than her victory.

Equality get real , they get paid plenty, if you can hit it over the net you reach the top 100 and they get similar pay to men considering the Williams sisters can dominate even if they dont train hard. If they want the same pay and equality play against men. This argument is old and boring and unequal.

Yes,...............women's tennis, where the Williams tactically grunt there way to a 6/1 6/1 win, despite committing 50 unforced errors........

Have you ever watched women's tennis from court side? It's rubbish. There should be no equality ever!! They play best of 3 sets not best of 5 & the standard is atrocious. Ever Serena wouldn't take a set off the declining Lleyton Hewitt.

I think Kyrgios gets more coverage because he is younger, and the fact that he beat Rafa at Wimbledon this year. He's starting to live up to expectations, something Bernard Tomic has failed to do. Casey is a late-bloomer who at the age of 29 is now setting standards as far as her ranking is concerned. As far as her biggest career victory is concerned, who could not forget her famous victory over Amelie Mauresmo at the 2008 Australian Open? And Stosur - perhaps it's time for her to hang up the racket sooner rather than later. Two years now since she last reached a Grand Slam quarter-final.

Yeah it's a shame Scott. The media have a lot to answer for in terms of how society views sportswomen. I don't believe it's the other way around.

I'm with you And I am a fan of Casey - she's an honest trier without drama, has overcome various obstacles at different points in here career and it's great to see her at her best

Supply and demand... The media's sexism reflects the sexism of the masses who consume the content.

I actually wrote a university essay on this exact same thing back in 2002. Back then the media coverage of women's sport was focused predominantly on what the women were wearing rather than their games - at the time it was Serena William's catsuit at the US Open that the papers were reporting on - not her tennis (I might add that her tennis was outstanding that year as she went on to win the US Open title as part of her "Serena Slam"). I think you're right about the media coverage of sport being sexist, and I would have hoped that 12 years down the track (from when I wrote my university essay) that things would have changed, but I guess not.

More time is spent focussing on Stosur's early exit - again - than is on the Dellacqua win.

But then Sam Stosur usually gets a decent run if she goes well. Maybe it's that we've only got space for one top female player... which is no better
