Argentina lock to miss Wallabies clash

By News / Wire

Argentina lock Tomas Lavanini will miss Saturday night’s Rugby Championship Test against the Wallabies on the Gold Coast after pleading guilty to foul play on All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw.

Lavanini was cited for “dangerous charging” by the SANZAR citing commissioner on Sunday for not using his arms when he cleaned out McCaw in a ruck in the 51st minute of the Test won 28-9 by New Zealand in Napier on Saturday.

Match referee Pascal Gauzere awarded a penalty for the incident, but the citing commissioner deemed the incident met the red card threshold for foul play.

SANZAR duty judicial officer Adam Casselden later accepted Lavanini’s guilty plea and he was subsequently suspended for one week.

Lavanini will be available to take on the All Blacks in Argentina at the end of the month.

“The player’s action can be described as reckless and not intentional. I accepted as mitigating factors the age of the player, his good playing record and his early guilty plea,” Casselden said in a statement.

Could you link to whenever this happened? I'm genuinely curious as I haven't seen those, and I thought it would've gotten more media attention if it had been seen by the media.

Would that be the same cup final rougerie gouged his eyes ? Theres no doubting intent when you reach down and stick yer grubby mitts in someones eyes . And theres never justification for foul play. Nothing stealthy about coopers knee dropping.

It's an interesting point you make nickoldschool about the All Blacks not needing your support. I imagine of all the major Rugby playing Nations the All Blacks would have the smallest fan base. Let's just say the every Kiwi is an All Black fan, which of course they are not, but let's just say they are. That would only give them approx 4 million fans total! I'm picking that is no where near the fan base of the other nations?

The only person I've ever seen kick someone in the nuts on the Rugby field is Richie McCaw. Lashed out at a couple of years ago with his boot to Quade's nether region.

That would be a good article for someone to write. For my money the worst was Tuqiri's spear tackle in 2006. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikQg1k-MBDQ "Verging on dangerous?"

I might accept "Sir" Richie...but he isn't a "saint" gents.........has anybody cared to go back to the 4th Bledisloe in HK 2010 to understand how and why the shite between the great man and Quade ever started...?? I know I know, it sounds almost like blasphemy doesn't it? However, go frame-by-frame at the correct juncture and you will definitely see where Quade learnt how to drop the knee into the opponents head so stealthily. So impressed he tried it on Sir in the corresponding final Bled in Bris 2011. One example not enough your Honour? Ask Morgan Parra of Les Bleu if remembers the taste of McCaw's knee in the 2011RWC Final (or anything much for that matter). That was a blatant one that he was let to get away with...taking out the French playmaker under the invisible Sir cloak at Eden Park......until the over-the-top get square from Rougerie late in the game.... Next you'll swear he's 7 foot tall and blowing fire crackers out of his arse. I respect him as the greatest 7 we've had in our game but I don't kid myself he's somehow a cleanskin.

France and (distant second) the wallabies Riccardo, am French-aussie. All Blacks have always been the team I enjoyed the most watching but when you are French and have been living in Oz for over a decade its hard to barrack for the kiwis...there is a bit of a rivalry between Fr, Oz and NZ ;) Having said that I have the utmost respect for the AB, its just that they don't need my support and I would like the argies to finally win a RC game.

@ nickoldschool : actually this is the new way of handling sport -related inquiries. in 99% of the cases u plead guilty and do not offer any defensive arguement. then u get off lightly. happened last month in the cricket series between South Africa and Sri Lanka. South Africa were charged for ball tamperin and they just pleaded guilty and escaped witha very light punishment. subsequently one SA official went on record saying it was better to plead guilty and cop a cash penalty than try to defend and get a match ban. Sri Lanka lost the match and were pissed off with the match referee :) it was questioned by many in cricket circles, becoz this was the 3rd instance SA were questioned for alleged ball tampering. if one is to compare the yellow to habana and non-action (during match) for the head & shoulders charge, easy to see there is no justice !!!

Nobrain unfortunately I can not agree re: Savea, there is no comparison between a possible shoulder charge and a deliberate head butt! I can agree that given the description applied to the offence by the SANZAR Citing Commissioner, if he had received a Yellow/Red Card during the Match he may be playing this week?

Not sure what part of your post to comment on Nick. Lavanini very deliberately set out to hurt McCaw. I agree. Another amazing decision from officialdom that we have unfortunately been experiencing for some time now. The clamour for address in that respect is growing over here. You were barracking for the Argies? Mate, I thought it was France or the All Blacks for you?

Well I disagree nobrain, Savea's tackle was imo not in the same category as Lavanini. Imo the argie lock should at least have been yellow carded and even a red would have been ok if you consider guys like Warburton were red carded for tackles which werent as dangerous. I dont get your comment about being yellow carded and not banned, both arent mutually exclusive, you can get a yellow and a ban its not one or the other. Savea's error was to not fully commit imo but it was a split second decision thats why it doez look like the beginning of a shoulder charge. For the record I was barracking for the argies.

Plus, I think every player would reciprocate if it was a fan who tackled another player and/or the ref....there's no need for it and the players will quite rightly react as McCaw and the Bok players did.

He didn't reciprocate there, he just tried to pull him off the ref. The Springbok captain gave the guy a quick slap across the face, not McCaw.

hang on...he reciprocated against that bokke fan who thought he'd finish his pint in the refs ear...
