On Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys once again showed the world why they continue to be the whipping boys of the NFL, losing their season opening game at home to the San Francisco 49ers 28-17.

For a franchise once dubbed ‘America’s Team’ there are problems right across the board from their deplorable, depleted defence and struggling quarterback Tony Romo, right up to management including head coach Jason Garrett and team owner Jerry Jones.

The Dallas Cowboys were the team of early 1990s, winning three Super Bowl titles within four years. But they haven’t made the playoffs in four seasons with their last postseason appearance coming back in 2009.

Coming into this season there were question marks over their franchise quarterback Romo, 34, who had undergone a second back surgery in the offseason. The bookies were in a bidding war to see who could throw more interceptions this year, Romo or Eli Manning.

On Sunday, against a confident 49er defence, Romo struggled throwing three picks in the first half and all of them were horrible mistakes. He continually threw into traffic and on two of those interceptions failed to hit star wide receiver Dez Bryant, resulting in turnovers.

Give Romo credit, however, he was trying to make something happen on offense but failed miserably. It’s not like Dallas can cut Romo either because larger than life owner Jones has pledged an insane amount of money to his quarterback.

He signed Romo to a six-year, $108 million contract last year and his salary cap alone next season is a whopping $27.7 million.

Then there’s the Dallas defence.

They lost – through no fault but their own – their most important and best player in DeMarcus Ware, who was released and signed a three-year $30 million deal with the Denver Broncos.

Last season their defence was woeful and ultimately cost them a lot of games, games that they could have easily won had it not been for their failure to stop an opposing team. It says a lot about their management that Jones regrets the opportunity to draft rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Running a team where your first priority should be to address the serious issues surrounding your defence and there sits Dallas on NFL Draft Day considering taking a quarterback with their first pick. That’s troubling.

Maybe it is time for Jones to give the job of general manager to someone else because, if recent history is any indicator, Jones is a great businessman but a mediocre general manager.

It looks like a long and arduous season for Dallas fans and unless something changes drastically they could be missing out on the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year.

The Cowboys are the team everybody loves to hate. Dallas fans want the boys to show some fight and everyone else wants the ‘Cowgirls’ to keep floundering.

From what we saw in week one it looks as though it might be another tough day at the office for them against an upbeat Tennessee Titans in week two.
