2014 Spring Carnival: Underwood Stakes live blog, tips, result

By Brent Ford / Roar Guru

The Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) is the centrepiece of another fantastic day of racing at Caulfield which gets its chance to shine as the Spring Carnival starts to take shape. Join The Roar for live commentary of the race and result from 3:50pm (AEST).

This year’s edition hasn’t attracted the quality of last year’s race but it would be hard to match the epic duel that It’s A Dundeel and Atlantic Jewel had in the race last year, in one of the best finishes of the spring.

With that said there is still plenty on offer in today’s race with The Offer to continue second up after a first up run in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes. He will get some quality opposition from Silent Achiever and Stipulate might also be an outside chance.

I loved the run of Silent Achiever in the Memsie, she came home late after being left on the turn and looked flashy late to finish fourth. Dissident has been in good form so I’ll be keeping an eye on Silent Achiever, having Damien Oliver onboard helps. Plus she also has a great second-up record, the only query here is the horse’s record at Caulfield which is ordinary.

The Offer looked good in the Dato Tan Chin Nam first up after the cleaner took over the pace in the race at Moonee Valley, I’m expecting some improvement in this race but it’s unsure whether Gai Waterhouse will play all her cards here.

Three weeks ago Stipulate was super impressive here over the 1700m journey. Last time he was second up he ran second to Le Roi who went on to have some good form behind It’s A Dundeel.

He beat Brambles last start who went on to win last start so that is something to consider today.

The one I’m really interested in is Super Cool. He did finish second last in the Memsie Stakes but it was off a lengthy break and he had to check off Moment of Change’s heels in the straight. Which means he could’ve gotten closer than he did.

In the Makybe last week he was travelling well but couldn’t keep the sprint up over the closing stages of the race. His splits from the 600-400m, and 400-200m were both impressive. With the added fitness 3rd-up, on the quick back-up and out to 1800m, he can produce a bold performance.

I’m taking Silent Achiever on top from The Offer, Super Cool and Stipulate.

Massive run from Foreteller who looks really good this spring running on fire, a massive effort from Happy Trails in the run and CrackerJack King showed plenty running wide out in front for much of the trip. Lidari showed glimpses but couldn't finish it off. That's all from me today but there is plenty to look forward to from this race I reckon.

CrackerJack King runs to the lead from Lidari and heading the turn he is six wide. Lidari sweeps to the lead and the runners are coming home! Crackerjack king and Lidari are fighting it out but Lidari has thought him off now Foreteller and Happy Trails come in on the action but Foreteller is too strong in the run taking it out from Happy Trails, then Crackerjack King and Lidari trailed off for fourth.

Our focus now shifts to the Underwood Stakes. Silent Achiever is the current favourite but I would love to see a good run out of The Offer. Foreteller and Stipulate are on the second line of betting with The Offer on the third line with Happy Trails. Star Rolling and Lidari.
