Jason Taylor named new Wests Tigers coach

By The Roar / Editor

Jason Taylor has been announced as the new Wests Tigers NRL coach on Monday afternoon.

Taylor beat a field including former coach Mick Potter’s assistants David Kidwell and Todd Payten, former St George Illawarra mentor Nathan Brown and ex-Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin.

An assistant under Trent Robinson with defending premiers the Sydney Roosters for the past two seasons, Taylor has enjoyed success as a head coach at NRL level, leading Parramatta to the finals in 2006 and South Sydney to their first finals series in 18 years in 2007.

Taylor has previously coached Parramatta as a caretaker after Brian Smith vacated the role in 2006, where he enojyed a successfuly transition to the top job with a 64 per cent win ratio. After his initial success at Souths he then had two largely unsuccessful years at the club.

A goal-kicking halfback in his playing days, Taylor held the overall points scoring record in the NRL, before being taken over by Andrew Johns in 2006.

He also holds the record for the most consecutive games in NRL history, with 194 straight.

Potter was told two weeks ago his contract as head coach with the joint venture would not be renewed after two tumultuous seasons at Concord.

Probably not. New board, new management (almost) and new coaching team. No reason the new set up won't be a success!

You're aware that the Board has changed significantly in the past three or four weeks?

Apparently not Pete. I read the headline of this storey, checked the calendar and it is not April 1st. Geez, I wonder what Farrah has said already and he hasn't even played a game under him.

No need to sack Taylor, captain/coach/ceo Robbie will just deck him during Mad Monday celebrations next year.

Taylor in this day and age would have been banned from the NRL like Carney for his antics with urine at the SCG and then for fighting his own player when coaching. I'd give Taylor less than a season before he is sacked from the Tigers. What money back special is Joel Caine offering for A Stuart/Taylor wager?

Jason Taylor is the first coach since the late great Ron Willey to coach another 1st grade team after coaching Souffs.

Your joking and this is what the new board decided. The guy who got drunk and tried to belt up his own player . should never have been allowed to coach again.

His first order of business should be strength and conditioning , we have been the laughing stock with injuries for the last 3 years Congrats Jason but I had high hopes for Mick Potter but he was effectively eaten by his own so for your own sake I really hope you have some good and LOYAL asst coaches ready and willing to enter the jungle with you and a strong plan to progress Maniah Cherrington if you would like a longer stay than 2 years and 37 stab wounds to the back!

Does anyone know if Robbie gave his approval to this coaching appointment? Or will we have Robbie working behind the scenes to have the third coach in a row sacked?

At last some sanity from the top down.. Jason was the best possible appointment and with a talented squad to work with a place in the 8 would not surprise.

Good luck coaching that rabble of a club. Potter is a good coach but the board is too arrogant to cop the blame themselves. Potter will now be named assistant coach of the roosters, you heard it here first
