Why are we acting like Souths are the only NRL team in Sydney?

By Daniel Nichols / Roar Guru

After winning the grand final last Sunday, South Sydney have embarked on a city-wide party that included a bus ride from Souths Juniors to Town Hall, and climbing the Harbour Bridge.

As the CBD was overtaken by thousands over South Sydney fans on Thursday, Clover Moore took to the steps of Town Hall for photo-ops after Michael McGuire and his team were awarded the key to the city of Sydney.

Souths fans took to social media to pronounce they “had the key to the city” while fans of every other NRL club asked: “Really?”

If the Bulldogs had won last Sunday evening, would they have received a ticker tape parade down George Street, or would they have received the key to the city? Why were the Roosters, who also represent a large part of Sydney, not awarded the key to the city?

The Bulldogs, Tigers, Manly, Panthers and Dragons were also overlooked for this honour, despite winning the NRL premiership since the turn of the millennium. All are based in Sydney.

I am all for a good celebration, and I enjoyed watching the South Sydney story unfold as much as the next non-Souths fan, but how does it make fans of every other club feel when Souths are continuously referred to as “the pride of the league”?

The media and commentators have been pushing the fairytale of a South Sydney victory for weeks, to the point where fans of opposition teams have accused them of bias.

The coverage last Sunday night was hammered by non-Souths fans as being greatly weighed toward the foundation club. The Daily Telegraph even ran a piece this week saying Souths winning makes the NRL stronger and that it was the best result for rugby league.

I certainly didn’t benefit from the Bunnies winning the comp, as my team did not, nor did the majority of NRL fans, yet we are told it was the best result for all.

I have a lot of friends that support the famous club, and I have enjoyed watching them celebrate, but surely enough is enough.

The bus parade I can stomach, but the key to the city? Over the top. South Sydney are one of many teams that represent parts of Sydney.

Is anyone else a little sick of the fanfare, or is this purely sour grapes?

To answer a few questions from the one-eyed supporters in the comments section; 1. St George Dragons and the Illawarra Steelers merged to form the St. George Illawarra Dragons, an entirely new team, and they won the competition in 2010, beating the Roosters 32-8. That's their first and only premiership. The Dragons and the Steelers ceased to exist in 1998 after they merged to avoid the axe of the NRL reducing 20 teams to 14. The difference between this and South Sydney was that South Sydney were axed from the top competition in 1999 before being RE-ADMITTED in 2002. They were not destroyed, and the team did not cease to exist, they were just not in the NRL competition for 3 years, whereas the Illawarra Steelers with no titles and the St. George Dragons with 15 titles ended to form the new franchise. The Dragons have 1 premiership, not 16 and they will not catch South Sydney. End of story. 2. "How does it feel when Souths are continuously referred to as the Pride of the League?" It's irrelevant. The Rabbitohs are the Pride of the League, the most premierships, the first winner of a grand final, and also one of two formation clubs along with the Eastern Suburbs Roosters. The Rabbitohs have more premierships, more members and more support from the community. For all intents and purposes, the Roosters are living forever in the Rabbitohs shadow. 3. The drama and the fanfare is to be expected in a case like this one; a fairytale story of the poster club for the NRL in their first grand final in 43 years is always going to be pounced upon, just the way it should be. And for all the Rooster fan boys bleating about it; the amount of media hype for Sonny Bill Williams returning was beyond ridiculous, especially when all the dickhead did was gloat and brag about his "success" and then bugger off again to return in a few years time for another ego boosting hype-fest. 4. The Key to the City is a symbolic title, and it's part of a great celebration for a great club that won the greatest grand final since 1989. If you are that fragile and delicate that you can't stand any other team rather than yours get the spoils of victory, then you probably shouldn't be watching League in the first place. 5. "Why didn't the Roosters get the Key to the City last year"? One, the Rabbitohs trump the Roosters, but more importantly, did you not think maybe the idea was only thought of this year? And before anybody calls me a biased "Souffs" supporter, I'm an Eels fan through and through and to be perfectly honest, I had no problems with the celebrations at all despite not tasting success since the 80's and being beaten by a team of cheating gits, although to be fair not much more can be expected from Melbourne really.

The NRL and CH 9 bias of souths in the finals series was beyond a joke. Firstly the semi against manly which was a "manly" home game with glory glory pumping out as souths ran out, when Easts and Penrith did not have their songs played when they ran out at the same field the next day with complaints on tripple M Todd Greenburg gave the answer that it was a neutral match so no team song would be played.. Amazingly no one asked why souths had their team song played the night before. Once again in the prem final souths had their team song while Easts did not.. In the prem final against Easts souths deserved to win however at 12-0 down and looking terrible any punter could see the refs giving souths 5 straight penalties and getting them back into the game to be 12 all at halftime. The GF was disgraceful, were the Bulldogs even involved? All week the NRL and CH 9 promoted souths and barely mentioned Canterbury.Great to see souths back in a GF however be fair and include both teams. This did not look like a GF it looked like a souths home game and was a terrible look. I thought it was great how souths celebrated the GF win but once again was way over top with getting the keys to the city. Yes redfern is in sydney city council however they were given a civic reception at town hall which is only reserved for national and state teams. Oh well the NRL have got the team they wanted to win the GF and as the media keep telling us RL is great again as apparently RL is only going well when souths are winning, Didn't realise the game had been going terrible for 43 years..

You could tell from their first final against Manly, which was a MANLY home final by the way, that this finals series was all about Souths and Sam Burgess to the media and commentators. At least now they have finally won and Sam is leaving, they will bugger off and not be in our faces any more.

You couldn't possibly understand if You aren't a Rabbits supporter, neither would I expect You to , I think We were awarded the Key to South Sydney "" Randwick"" were we not? Have You not heard that we have won the most comps (21 now) ? did You hear that when other teams were bending at the knees and merging with other clubs to stay a float , we held strong?, Did You hear that we were kicked out of the comp for 2 years ? Also did You hear that after George Piggins mortgaged His house to part finance our re-admittance into the comp and succeed? Did You hear that a couple of blokes who had some spare cash and injected it into our great club to bring us up to speed? Well did You hear , obviously not otherwise You wouldn't ask such silly questions with such ridiculous statements, Do You think we were favoured by the League when Issac Luke got suspended from the most important game of His career , and the 4 previous players up before the match preview commitee , and judiciary , with just as severe charges as His.... and got off ? Well? As I said before If You are not a supporter of the Rabbits You could not understand , but a little common sense and research may of saved You from making a goose of Yourself. Sour grapes is an understatement ! Go the Rabbits

South Sydney territory is ALL of the Municipal council areas of Sydney, South Sydney and Botany. 90% of Randwick Council area: Every street or road South of Alison Road, and West of the Eastern Distributor. i.e. Sydney town hall is in the South Sydney territory. End of the discussion!

The story of Souths victory is the story of the league in itself. This is the resurrection Souths needed and the game is Rugby League. Well done Souths!! Both winners. Cant wait for 2015!
