The 2014 AFL Trade and Free Agency period was set on fire on Wednesday, with six trades completed and a number of big names crossing clubs, including Dayne BeamsRyan Griffen and Tom Boyd.

Well, a massive day of trades in the end with six deals done. Let’s recap.

In our first trade of the day, three clubs got involved as Collingwood gained Travis Varcoe from Geelong while sending Heritier Lumumba to Melbourne, and Mitch Clark moved from Melbourne to Geelong.

My Take: I don’t put much stock in Varcoe or Lumumba, but if Geelong can get Clark back to peak form, he’s an excellent pick up for them. A great fit alongside Tom Hawkins.

The second trade was the biggest of the trade period to date as Collingwood and Brisbane finally agreed to a deal, with the Magpies sending Dayne Beams and pick 67 north to Brisbane in exchange for Jack Crisp and picks 5 and 25.

My Take: Win-win for both clubs. The Lions secure an instant boost to their midfield while Collingwood can hopefully invest in the draft and get some good talent.

That led to our third trade of the day, as Collingwood passed pick 25 on to North Melbourne for Levi Greenwood.

My Take: A good get by the Pies, but also a good effort by North to secure pick 25 rather than accept Collingwood’s original offer of pick 30. North were bound to lose Greenwood but at least held out for the most they could get.

Our fourth trade of the day came as something of a surprise, as Geelong gave up pick 21, which they had only received in exchange for Allen Christensen on Monday, to nab Rhys Stanley from the Saints, as well as pick 60.

My Take: A big win for the Saints who now have another highish draft pick to rebuild with. I’m not a big fan of Stanley but he could go alright at the Cats especially if he gets to play as third tall.

After more than a week of haggling, Carlton and Greater Western Sydney finally came to an agreement which saw Carlton give up pick 7 in the draft to secure Kristian JakschMark Whiley and pick 19.

My Take: A good one for both teams. The Giants sell off some want-away depth to move up in the draft, while Carlton get more bang for their buck with three youngsters instead of one.

And last but certainly not least was the one that shocked us all, as the Western Bulldogs and Greater Western Sydney, having both in the last week ruled out trading their players, agreed to a deal that saw Ryan Griffen and Tom Boyd swap clubs, and pick 6 move from the Bulldogs to the Giants.

My Take: Trade of the century. Giants got a good deal for Boyd I think, given he wanted out, and the Dogs get the key forward they have needed for so long. We’ll be debating this one for decades.

So what happens next? There’s just one day of the trade period left and while most of the big names who had requested moves are now sewn up, there’s a lot left to be done before 2pm tomorrow.

A solution to the Paddy Ryder situation is still needed, and it’s rumoured that Greater Western Sydney, who now hold picks 4, 6 and 7 in the draft, will be active again tomorrow. They might go after established players, or they might go after St Kilda’s pick 1.

We’ll find out on Thursday!

Here we go again – another trade! Rhys Stanley joins Geelong, the trade is Stanley and pick 60 from St Kilda to Geelong for pick 21.

And the final link in the five-team trade is finished as Levi Greenwood leaves North Melbourne to join Collingwood, and the Kangaroos gain pick 25 in return.

The first trade of the day is complete and it is a three-team deal between Collingwood, Geelong and Melbourne.

Collingwood have gained Geelong’s Travis Varcoe on a three year deal, and sent Heritier Lumumba to Melbourne. Melbourne have then traded Mitch Clark on to Geelong.

No draft picks were exchanged in the deal.

My Take: Potentially a win for all clubs involved here, but I think Mitch Clark going to Geelong has the most upside. If he gets body and mind right he’s the perfect foil for Tom Hawkins.

Should have a big trade announcement very soon. This one is expected to see Dayne Beams get to Brisbane, with Jack CrispLevi Greenwood and Travis Varcoe going to Collingwood, Heritier Lumumba to Melbourne and Mitch Clark to Geelong. I’ll have full details as soon as they’re available.

Sounds like a Dayne Beams announcement is imminent.

It looks like the luck of Carlton midfielder Mitch Robinson may have run out, with the Blues unwilling to offer him a new contract and no other clubs making any significant inquiries to acquire him ahead of the 2015 season.

Despite his obvious talent, Robinson’s lack of discipline looks likely to cost him a second chance at AFL level. He was suspended multiple times this year, and late in the year lied to coach Mick Malthouse about his involvement in a late-night altercation that left him with a fractured jaw.

It is expected that the Blues will delist Robinson, and his best chance of joining another club will be as a Delisted Free Agency once the Trade period is over.

It was another slow day in the trading world yesterday despite speculation that a massive deal which would see Dayne Beams join Brisbane and at least five other players find new homes was just around the corner.

Instead Tuesday came and went without a single trade, leaving us with still just four trades completed so far in 2014.

However with just two days left of the trade period, we’re almost certain to see things get started today.
