Sun hits out after AFL trade fails

Gold Coast ruckman Daniel Gorringe has hit back at social media critics after his “go-home” AFL trade fell through.

The 22-year-old nominated Port Adelaide as his preferred club.

But the Suns and Power were unable to strike a trade for Gorringe, who has a year left on his contract.

And his fate was sealed once the Power were able to secure their top trade target, Essendon ruck-forward Patrick Ryder.

Gorringe lashed out when it became clear he would stay on the Gold Coast.

“People tweeting, don’t you dare question my work rate, personality or anything else,” he said on Twitter.

“You don’t know me or anything regarding my personal life.

“(A) lot of you have some crazy rumours going around – better check your sources. Go Suns.”

Gorringe added that he requested a trade for family reasons only.

“Let’s get this very clear – I am more than happy to be a member of the Suns in 2015 and I look forward to continued success and growth,” Gorringe said.

“I am blessed with a great support network back in Adelaide and we are all understanding.

Port list manager Jason Cripps said they tried to enlist other clubs to make the Gorringe trade work, without success.

Suns football operations manager Marcus Ashcroft added that Gorringe was a big part of their plans.

“Unfortunately Port weren’t able to come up with a deal we were happy with,” Ashcroft said.

“We think he’s part of our core. A required player at our footy club in 2015 and we think he can play some really good footy.

“If we couldn’t get a deal that would satisfy the club, he knew he’d be with our footy club next year

“He’s going to come back on the first day of pre-season training ready to go.”

Gorringe only managed three senior games this season for a career total of 20.

He played for SANFL side Norwood before joining the Suns as one of their foundation players.

He won't be a free agent so a suitable trade between clubs will need to be made or he can walk out and take his chances in the pre season draft and hope that no one offers for him until Port gets a pick which probably won't happen till late, much like what happened with Nick Stevens.

What will the Suns get if he leaves out of contract next year?

Don't know what the rumours were but a "Mark Gorringe" claiming to be Daniel's father hit out at Port on FB just after trade deadline that hey had promised to use the second round pick on getting his son home but then went back on their word to use it on Ryder (although soon after the comments were deleted maybe on his son's advice). I think it was more a simple case of both Gorrringe and Ryder being in contract and Port just not having enough to bargain with where as Hawthorn were able to have Frawley walk to them for nothing and then using their first rounder on O'Rouke.
