The Mackinnon Stakes (2000m, weight-for-age, Group 1) is our second feature here on Derby Day. Will the Cox Plate form hold up? Start time is 3:00pm AEDT, so join us for all the updates from the mounting along with the race coverage.

With $1 million, this is the richest ‘back-up’ race in Australia. History says horses coming from the Caufield Cup or the Cox Plate win this race, with Side Glance, Alcopop, Glass Harmonium, So You Think and Scenic Shot the last five winners.

The track should be playing evenly by this stage, although any rain will help the backmarkers.

There looks to be a lack of obvious speed in this race, however Mourinho did lead all the way in the Cranbourne Cup and may look to dictate terms again.

Rising Romance, Hawkspur and Star Rolling should look to take up forward positions along with Amralah in his first start for Lloyd Williams.

Foreteller and Happy Trails were both luckless in the Cox Plate, finishing less than a length off Adelaide. Criterion couldn’t quite sprint with them around the bend, but has great form at Flemington.

Rising Romance was brave in the Caulfield Cup and bloused by a quality stayer in Admire Ratki. Brambles was also good on-speed in the same race, while Hawkspur covered plenty of ground and battled on in the straight.

Moriarty also comes off the Caulfield Cup and ran third in this race off a similar run last year.

He’s Your Man comes off a strong win in the Epsom, but does step up to weight-for-age (up 6.5g as well) for the first time. Star Rolling was sound in the same race, while Mourinho finally avoided The Cleaner last start to collect the Cranbourne Cup.

The newcomers are led by Farraaj, who took out two handicaps in England over the summer and has been flying in trackwork at Werribee (if that counts for anything). Amralah is talented and is still in the Melbourne Cup, while Costume won New Zealand’s richest weight-for-age race last start and has form around SIlent Achiever and Viadana.

Most of these should handle the back-up, so stick with class and those who settle on the pace.

Tips:
1. Rising Romance 2. Farraaj 3. Critireon 4. Hawkspur
