I'll bat anywhere, anytime: Shane Watson

By Steve Larkin / Wire

A rejuvenated Shane Watson says he’ll bat anywhere, anytime to help Australia cope with the “really big reality check” dished out by Pakistan.

Watson is willing to return to the troublesome Test number three batting slot, saying his latest injury enforced lay-off has given him a new perspective on cricket.

“I just want an opportunity to be able to play again and wherever they want me in the batting order, I’m happy to be a part of the team,” Watson told reporters in Adelaide on Monday.

Watson will play his first game for Australia since April when making a comeback from ankle and calf ailments in Wednesday’s Twenty20 series opener against Australia.

“I am as fresh as I have been for a long, long time. I’m ready to play anything,” said Watson after his longest break from the game since after the 2007 World Cup.

“I love playing the game of cricket. And this break has really continued to make me realise how much I love the game and how much I love playing.

“So any game that is available, I want to be able to play.”

Watson said he had closely watched Australia’s woeful performances in the Test series against Pakistan.

“After everything that we have done over the last 18 months to build it up, things are never meant to go perfectly well,” he said.

“We have had an incredible run in the Ashes last summer and in South Africa as well.

“Things always pop up at times to give you a reality check when you need it.

“This, certainly from afar, it looks like it has been a really big reality check for everyone.

“We have always grown out of situations that haven’t been ideal for us and we’ll certainly do that again.”

The 33-year-old refined his batting technique and physical training regimes during his latest stint on the sidelines.

“I didn’t want it (the break) because I just want to play as much as I possibly can for my country,” he said.

“But out of any negative situation I have always tried to find the positives and there has certainly been some positives out of it.

“To be able to just continue to be able to refine my batting, but also continue to look at where my physical preparation is as well … that is also the most important thing to me, to be able to stay fit.”

Yes, He talks about little things very often. Its not his fault. The team management & CA sends only him to the press talk 95% of the time. Hence, we hear so much about watson(actually he says so much garbage like a child who details everything as if it is important). As i said, its not his fault that he is with press so often.

Watson needs to stay fit and fiddling or the World Cup Marsh is his replacement for good....deal with it Shane....go pump off another Brut commercial ! Hughes wil be drafted back into the side for Summer at the expense of Rodgers Lyon will remain in the side but continue balding at a sharp rate...better than wearing a wig though, like Warner does...a lip wig aka that dirty mo he has

He does, and for some reason he feels the need to talk about every little thought that he has. It's like his internal monologue only we all get to hear it. Unfortunately.

I've seen enough videos of his interviews. In an written interview, first, they give a wrong headline & they never quote everything he says. They quote only a part of it & sometimes, in such a way that it gives readers a wrong impression. Instead of making a blind comments, why don't you give proof? Fact is...He never said "I wanna bat at so & so position".. Guy: 1. Do u like pizza? 2. Do u like to open the innings Me: 1. I love pizza 2. I would love to open It does not mean that i'm telling or asking for a pizza Moreover shuffling watson is a huge mistake. Instead of removing watson from no.1 & shuffling him in all positions from no.3 to no.6, why didn't clarke himself play no.1 to no.3? Coz He knows he can't bat against a seaming new ball on a fresh track & bouncy tracks. I don't care where watson plays. But the most important thing is... he shouldn't bowl in tests. Coz bowling injures him everytime. But clarke tells him "You won't get selected if u do not bowl" This politics is to eliminate watson by injuring him. He was removed from his opener slot by clarke when he was the best in the team by far in 2012 & recently he was removed from no.3 when he was better than everyone else at no.3. Watson's great batting in top order is 100 times more important than watson bowling only to get injured. All this deliberate senseless shuffling of his batting order & stressing on his bowling for getting selected has affected his confidence and body. One can see that in his performance. I only hope, he stops bowling in tests.

I suggest you read his previous interviews. He's fairly specific each time.

He never ever said “I want to play at a certain position”. Its only the media which comes up with false headlines. When a interviewer asks “How about playing as a opener again”, he replies “i would love to. I love taking on the bowlers with new ball”. Everybody is suited to certain positions. But He never ever demanded or asked for playing a certain position.

Although I assume he is quite pleased that he didn't take part in this tour. I don't think any of the players has done anything to boost his own status. By staying right away from it, Watson has covered himself in glory.

I can't see how his answers are so honest though. He changes his story so often.

Was it maybe a week ago that he said that he liked playing in the top order as he didn't really understand how to bat in complex match situations? Sounded like a very dumb thing for an experienced player to say and now he's backtracking fast as Mitch Marsh has made him nervous. So that's one good thing to come out of the car-wreck of a series.

I for one will be glad to see Watson and Harris back in the side. Of course if his stats are best in the higher order that is where he would prefer to bat. Wouldn't anyone??? And to say he demands where he bats, well if the media asks questions he is merely answering with honesty. Do you seriously believe he is calling press conferences and making demands?? With Haddin out injured, I think Watson is a must. Am really hoping Harris is fit too.

"I'll bat anywhere, anytime" - it's a great motto to have particularly after his earlier mottos of not wanting to bat down the list, not wanting to bat 3 blah blah blah etc....he's finally worked out that he bats where he is bloody well picked (& if we had any other options I wouldn't pick him at all). We need to find 3 batsman outside of Warner, Clarke & Smith who will take up in the baton in terms of what being a test cricket batsman is all about - occupying the crease, not giving your wicket away easily and making the bowlers work hard. The current players should have to sit through a week's worth of videos watching Border, Boon, Langer, the Waughs etc toughing it out against the West Indies. This current breed is soft and seemingly place absolutely no value on their wicket. I'm looking directly at you Maxwell, whose performance at no. 3 was insult to cricket. Regrettably also, the relegation of Shield cricket to a second fiddle, bit part player in domestic cricket has bred soft cricketers and its permeated its way to the top in recent times. The wins against a pathetically weak England and against Sth Africa (which admittedly had more merit) have already lead to complacency. However, never mind, all's rosy with CA's coffers full to the brim and to the powers that be, that's all that seems to matter. Sorry, IMHO rant over.

Sounds to me that he is worried about Mitch Marsh taking his place in the Australian side permanently, so he is playing the Mr nice guy card. Everyone knows he sooked about batting at 7 then sooked about batting at first drop until he got his treasured opening spot and he didn't perform there either. Sorry, but I hope Shane "the cancer of the team" Watson has played his last test.
