The 2014 Melbourne Cup is down to 23 runners, with Sea Moon scratched this morning due to suffering an elevated temperature on the eve of the Cup.

A fever is usually associated with fighting off an illness, and Victorian Racing stewards reported that Sea Moon would be scratched at 7:48am.

Sea Moon was rated as a rank outside chance, at some $201 to win the $6 million dollar race.

Jockey Tommy Berry was to ride the stallion from barrier 18 – with the horse set to wear blinkers for the first time in an attempt to get him switched on. But now Berry will be without a runner for the Cup.

Sea Moon ran 13th in the 2013 edition of the Melbourne Cup, and ran dead last in the 2014 Caulfield Cup, underlining its length in the eyes of the bookies.

Lloyd Williams will have just one entry in the 2014 Cup, leading chance Fawkner the only representative from the stable.

Japanese Raider Admire Rakti remains the favourite, with Fawkner widely considered the best hope of the locals.
