Melbourne Cup 2014: What the jockeys said

By The Roar / Editor

The jockeys of the 2014 Melbourne Cup told their tales of the hard-fought race – with plenty happy with how they went, and plenty who found their horses unable to last through the very fast pace of the race.

Ryan Moore (Protectionist): WINNER He’s won very easy like a very good horse. They went a strong pace. There was a lot of speed early on, and I was struggling for position, so I dropped back on the rail. I followed Mutual Regard before he gave in and I was just searching for splits and I had so much horse underneath me.

“I followed Mutual Regard before he gave in and I was just searching for splits and I had so much horse underneath me.”

Gerald Mosse (Red Cadeaux): Second – He went a super race like he always does. Very big heart and he tried so hard all the way. Just found one too good for him again.

Glen Boss (Who Shot Thebarman): Third – Ran a great race, he really hit the line and was still making ground on the line. Fabulous run.

Joao Moreira (Signoff): Fourth – Fantastic run, beautiful run during race, got bump before turning even though got the run and was very proud of him.

James McDonald (Willing Foe): Great run got an unbelievable run in the race and I thought I was going to win turning for home.

Michael Rodd (Precedence): Ran amazing, got great run into race ran out of his skin.

Dwayne Dunn (Araldo): He ran terrific, sprinted well off the corner and will benefit really well from running the trip.

Glyn Schofield (Au Revoir): He ran well and tried hard.

Craig Newitt (Seismos): Seismos did what Seismos does – plugged away at the one pace which wasn’t quick enough.

Nick Hall (Fawkner): Ridden that way there was probably a bit too much pressure and he struggled at the two miles.

Tye Angland (Opinion): Had perfect run early, lost position mid-race, covered a lot of ground from the half-mile.

William Buick (Gatewood): He ran a good race but the ground was a bit quick for him and he didn’t really get the trip.

Damien Oliver (Mutual Regard): Moved into the race nicely turning for home but he juyst pulled too hard and had nothing left for the finish.

Kerrin McEvoy (Lucia Valentino): Got held up between the 600 and the 400 but when she got some room I think she might have been feeling the ground and was a little suspect at the trip.

Luke Nolen (Brambles): Didn’t stay.

Dean Yendall (Unchain My Heart): Not up to them.

Andrea Atzeni (My Ambivalent): Went keenly, too keenly, tired.

Hugh Bowman (Junoob): Honest but struggled late with the trip.

Ben Melham (Lidari): Didn’t stay.

Steven Arnold (Royal Diamond): Just wasn’t up to it.

Chad Schofield (Mr O’Ceirin): No luck.

Zac Purton (Admire Rakti): I knew he was in trouble when he didn’t tow me into the race around halfway from home so I eased him down straight away, the horse’s welfare comes first. It’s very sad. He gave me a great thrill at Caulfield and for this to happen to him is just not fair. I didn’t think they’d beat me. I thought he’d win today and the whole way through the first half of the race I thought that too.

I agree with Robert. It should be put back to around 4 or even 4.30 pm. second last or even last race. Who knows, with the weather weirding the way it is we might cop a 35 degree one day. How man Euro horses would croak it If it was run in the middle of the arvo if we did cop a real hot one. I hope Criterion is set for the Melb cup next year. He runs on so hard in his races. If you watch the Cox Plate again Adelaide took off around him and put 4 lengths on him. Criterion like a true champion stayer just ground away and went down by a length and a half. He was the only horse taking ground off the winner in the straight. I also think San Pedre looks like a true 2 miler. Have a look at his Derby run. The Cuban Fighter might be another one to consider early on when the markets first come out. 300 to 1 each way would be a nice bet. Bart might still win another won with that thing that won the Golden Rose. I cant remember its name.Derby next year cup the next. What do you think?

Racing officials please consider holding the Melbourne Cup later in the day. It is only Victorians who have a public holiday so difficult for many in other states to manage. I've missed the race the last two years due to work commitments but also: Better if later for English/European audiences. Currently it is 4am in London when the Cup is run. The Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate is run approx 4.40pm - that would be a great time for the Cup (5pm even better). Productivity in the work place would surely increase as a full day's work is still possible in those other states. 3pm is home time (or close to it) for schools - not ideal. Please consider - thanks
