Melbourne Cup day 2014: Raceday live updates, tips and results

Melbourne Cup day is finally here, and with a huge 10-race card at Flemington you won’t miss any action here at The Roar.

We’ll be bringing you updates across the day with weather reports, scratchings, track conditions, hot tips and any inside information we can get our hands on.

As of 10am, there are two scratchings in the 2014 Melbourne Cup. Sea Moon was scratched yesterday and Andrew Lemon’s pick Cavalryman was scratched this morning after having an injury scare last night.

Race 1: Emirates Airlines Plate, 1000m – 10:30AM
A Listed race for the fillies down the straight kicks off the card. Only half have race experience, including Mihalic and Pierrette who both won in good time on debut.

Results was unlucky behind Mihalic at Flemington and Miss Idyllic showed good speed at Caulfield. Of the unraced,Lady Esprit and Thurlow bumped into Fontinon at the trails, while Antelucan looked promising in a jump out.

Leaning to horses drawn wide, as the grandstand side was the place to be on Derby Day.

Race 2: tab.com.au Trophy, 1700m – 11.10AM
The mares are in action here, with solid speed expected from Zoomania and Amanpour. Girl In Flight should appreciate the drop in class after missing a start in the Myer Classic.

Spirit of Heaven and Dig A Pony come out of the same race of Bonaria, while Precious Gem was huge in the Tesio on Cox Plate day. Khutulun has been winning in weaker grade, but should appreciate the 1700m and Entertains comes down from Sydney after an impressive win on the Kensington track.

Race 3: Visit Victoria Plate, 2800m – 11:50AM
The stayers line up in a test of stamina in a real Melbourne Cup consolation. Order Of The Sun has the class, but must back up off a gut-busting Bendigo Cup last week.

Renew has found a weak race, while Grand Marshal has the Chris Waller polish. Of the others, Don Doremo is untapped, Luck’s A Fortune will stay all day and Anudjawun doesn’t win out of turn, but does drop in class.

Race 4: Lavazza Short Black, 1400m – 12:30PM

Al Aneed should lead here with Kirani crossing from out wide. The favourite will be The Quarterback, who showed plenty of ability as a three-year-old and won well at Seymour second-up.

The main threat will be Spy Decoder, who posted quick closing sectionals in the Epsom. Gracious Prospect scored first-up at Cranbourne and Baligari has strong Adelaide form. An interesting race with plenty of chances.

Race 5: Schweppes 1000m – 1:15PM
A big field of three-year-old scamper down the straight. Plenty of speed here with Bullpit, Rough Justice, Alaska, Toothless and Ms Mazetti all showing gate speed.

Law should arguably have beaten Galaxy Pegasus at the Valley and has drawn the right spot here to get the sit off a hot pace. Rough Justice has been freshened off an impressive Caulfield win and Ms Mazetti showed promised as a two-year-old.

Race 6: Lexus Hybrid Plate, 1400m – 2:00PM
Not a great deal of speed here, with Fitna the likely leader from a wide gate. Wine Tales should find the perfect spot behind the leaders and picked up the leader nicely at Rosehill.

Sea Spray is yet to run a bad race, while Piaminx had plenty of excuses at Ballarat.

Race 7: Melbourne Cup, 3200m – 3:00PM

Race 8: James Boags Premium Stakes, 1800m – 3:55PM

Should be plenty of speed on with Pheidon leading with plenty of pressure from Fat Al, Travolta and Atacama hunting forward as well. Wide open race, so I’ll go with a roughie in Tanby after his good first-up run with 58kg.

Stipulate has been competitive in Group 1 races this preparation, likewise Pheidon. Sysmo arguably should have won the Sale Cup.

Race 9: MSS Security Spring, 1200m – 4:35PM
Plenty of speed here as the older sprinters do battle down the straight six. Target In Sight won well on the limit at Caulfield and the form has been strong since.

That’s A Good Idea has bumped into Deep Field at its past two starts, while Not Listenin’tome and Iconic were close up at weight-for-age in the Manikato. Aomen won first-up, but does drop to 1200m.

Race 10: HKJC Stakes, 1400m – 5:15M
The mares round out the card, where Lady Lakshmi should find a comfortable lead. Rose of Choice, She’s Clean and My Sabeel all come off good runs in Sydney.

Mahara should measure up if it gets a start, while Griante was unlucky at Geelong (most of these come through that race) after beating a handy field at Caulfield.
