Leading up to his UFC 180 showdown with Ricardo Lamas, Dennis Bermudez was riding a seven-fight streak and making a strong case for a featherweight title shot.

Those aspirations were put on hold over the weekend.

Lamas floored Bermudez with a perfectly placed jab, then latched onto Bermudez’s neck to force a tap via guillotine at the 3:18 mark of the first round.

The 32-year-old American jiu-jitsu black belt showed his grappling prowess as he utilised a high elbow technique that allowed him to generate a serious amount of torque. The strain on Bermudez’s neck was so tight that he couldn’t even put up a struggle, and submitted almost immediately.

The high elbow guillotine has been utilised by world-class jiu-jitsu black belts such as Marcello Garcia. It was also on display earlier in the night when Hector Urbina utilised it against Edgar Garcia.

However, the way in which Lamas pulled it off was particularly impressive as he threw his leg over the back of Bermudez as he sat into the choke. This not only sank the choke deeper, but ensured that his opponent could not escape. This same manoeuvre was recently on display at the grappling competition Metamoris, when American grappling phenom Garry Tonon executed it against Australian Kit Dale.

The showed how much Lamas has improved since his failed title attempt against Jose Aldo. If he continues with these sorts of exciting finishes, he may well find himself squaring off with Aldo again.
