Confirmed: Brisbane Roar's Mike Mulvey sacked

By The Roar / Editor

Various media reports indicate that Brisbane Roar coach Mike Mulvey has been fired from his position, following a series of poor results and player disharmony at the club.

Update: The full statement from the Brisbane Roar is below.

Mulvey, the reigning coach of the year, led the Queensland club to the 2013-2014 Premiership and Championship double, but has lost five of the opening six games at the helm.

News Limited reports that the Indonesian owners of the club, the Bakrie Group, have made the call, but Mulvey nor his players have yet been informed.

Former Netherlands international Frans Thijssen has been said to replace Mulvey until the end of the season.

SBS reported that Mulvey claimed he hadn’t heard from the club yet, saying: “I’ve had lots of texts and phone calls enlightening me with news of my supposed demise.”

Mixed reports suggest that Mulvey will be told on Sunday night, with a press conference to be held tomorrow to confirm the move and announce the new manager of the side, who have faded in the early season.

Mulvey’s only win of the season was a 4-0 thrashing of the Newcastle Jets, who remain without a win this season.

Again, the job of coach in the A-League shows it is an unlikely long-term proposition.

CLUB STATEMENT REGARDING MIKE MULVEY

Brisbane Roar FC Managing Director Sean Dobson has announced today that Head Coach Mike Mulvey will step down from the role, effective immediately.

“Head Coach Mike Mulvey met with Brisbane Roar FC management today. As a result, he will step down from the Head Coach’s position,” Dobson said.

“Brisbane Roar FC thanks Mike Mulvey for his contribution to the success of the club since his appointment as interim coach in December 2012 and as Brisbane Roar Head Coach in February 2013.

“As Head Coach, Mike Mulvey guided Brisbane Roar to the A-League 2013/14 Premiers’ Plate, winning the league by 10 points, before securing an historic Grand Final win on May 4, 2014 against Western Sydney Wanderers.”

Mr Dobson said as a result of a review by the Brisbane Roar FC board, which began immediately following the A-League 2013/14 season and included the first games of the club’s 2014/15 title defence, Mulvey was today informed he would no longer hold the position of Head Coach.

“The board review of all Brisbane Roar FC football operations was conducted in line with Brisbane Roar’s commitment to continual improvement,” Dobson said.

There will be no further comment from the Club today.

Perhaps the following article jb in which it states "Kenny doesn’t want to coach as such any more. This is a step forward for the club." may make the situation clearer regarding Ken Stead's role & place in the Roar. http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/football/brisbane-roar-football-conditioning-coach-ken-stead-appointed-clubs-football-director/story-fnii0fy1-1226721210804?nk=a6e3fba9bc164a3ee95babbfe9d7809a

Towser - I don't know Ken Stead nor have I ever spoken to him,but considering the length of time he has been employed by the club in positions that would put him close to the players to me it would make much more sense to have him as the "interim" coach for the remainder of the season, thereby cutting down of the risk factors of having a complete stranger with apparently no senior coaching experience over the last 10 years, come in and try to change the status quo that has obviously not been liked by the power men in the club.Just a thought. jb

Debate and speculation can go on and on as the spin of mgt progresses. (Did anyone think Matt Smith looked like he had a gun to his head at the press conference). It was an insult to the intelligence of supporters - the press conference. The best synopsis of why this is disgraceful was in the Australian this morning by an independent journalist. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/opinion/brisbane-roars-sacking-of-coach-mike-mulvey-is-sheer-madness/story-e6frg7t6-1227132433207

To be honest jb I find that a strange question to ask, never crossed my mind. He has his role & was only indicating he would obviously know more about the players than Thijssen having been there as you indicated a while.

Towser -To the best of my knowledge Ken Stead has been at the club through 3 managers,Ange,Rado, and Mike, and we have to imagine he would have had input into managerial know how during these tenures. Now, has he had no input over the last 8 or so weeks??? and what has changed that will see his input improve the Roar's problematic situation in such a short time. If you believe this will happen it raises another question, why are you not advocating that Ken should be given the top job right now.????jb

For the sake of clarity I am saying: -it is far more difficult to perform consistently in the A-league than in uncapped leagues -it is however possible for an A-League team to be consistent across seasons; -to be consistent across seasons, you need to to ensure your signings are spot-on, your coaching is excellent, you have a strong youth team and there is strong support from the club's administration -Brisbane is the best example in the 9 year history of the league to get the balance right (although WSW's AFC title is worth a whole chapter (maybe even a book) by itself)

So you're saying a team in the HAL is no more or less consistent than teams in other leagues? Keeping in mind that the equivalent of top 6/10 in the hal is top 12/20 in the epl say. Or 2/10 in hal is 4/20 in epl...8/10 in hal is 16/20 in epl and so on. It can be misleading looking at finishing position alone even...u have to halve the hal position relative to a euro league as there are half as many teams.

"And you’ve left off the start of this tenth season as it would have run counter to your argument :)" No, I left off the start of this season because the season isn't over. "The highlighting of this league wide trend is valid. You wont look at that as u know what the answer will be. Like i said, selective use of data." I have looked at it and I simply don't agree with your assertion - there are a number of teams that have been consistent high achievers across seasons. If you put the data into a table as you suggested I would love to discuss further.

jb Have no problem with, it for me it means just that interim.,Ken Stead will fill him in. Read his CV as did you, if he was to be THE coach I would certainly think the Bakries had lost the plot ,not impressive & patchy at best. In his future role though could be the right fit, only time will tell.

Towser- While it has been stated he is to be the interim coach I question exactly what that means.Thijssen was a good player in an excellent Ipswich Town team of the early 80's but unlike the other Dutchman at the club he appears to have struggled when he left Ipswich whereas Muhren went on to bigger and better thing with Ajax. That is not my debate on the matter. It is in his managerial and coaching CV I am more interested .He managed at Vitesse for 1 year, then 2 years at Malmo inSweden where he was dismissed when it lookedas if they were to be relegated. He returned to Holland where he had1 year at De Graafchap and 1 year at Fortuna, so in 6 years he had been at 4 clubs It is then a strange occurrence takes place,he moves to the Middle East, not as a club manager but as a youth coach. The year is now 2001 and he proceeds to apparently have this position at 4 different clubs bringing us up to 2009. This is where the doubt starts to creep in for he apparently has not worked at any club since 2009.,ie 5 years. Suddenly, out of the blue, he appears in Oz with the task we presume of resurrecting Roar's fortunes in the coming 20weeks. We haveto assume he knows none of the players and thus how they can perform but is already being touted in the press as just an "interim" coach until season's end when he will become Director of Development. At this rate we will soon have more chiefs than Indians and no doubt that will go a long way to satisfy the paid up members no end.Such is football. jb

And you've left off the start of this tenth season as it would have run counter to your argument :) It is indeed remarkable they managed to string a couple of good seasons together. Very few have which is my entire point. The highlighting of this league wide trend is valid. You wont look at that as u know what the answer will be. Like i said, selective use of data. Also we dont agree the league is "competitive"...imo its anti competitive as it restrains some clubs for the benefit of others...we have very different definitions of "competitive"

Nordster, it is a four year period in the 9 years since the league came into fruition (not a "couple of years"). I think we agree that the a-league is incredibly competitive - staying at or near the top is not an easy feat. Success under the salary cap requires the best from players, administrators and coaches and sustained success under that constraint must be admired. Brisbane's success in this salary capped league can be attributed to a combination of good signings, good coaching and good management (and a dose of good luck re:injuries). Now, as to the question of whether the salary cap constraint is holding back the standard of the league - I certainly concede that the talent available to the richest clubs is constrained by a salary cap. Whether that results in the lower standard league, well, we have had this argument on many occasions and must agree to disagree.

I am clearly and repeatedly talking about an overall trend across the league. Brisbane has fallen to this partly due to the loss of Berisha, cap related. Of course its more than one factor. Again i said that. Exercise: create a line graph of league finishing order of all clubs over all seasons and its very up and down. Which i would argue is damaging for clubs wanting to grow beyond the mediocre median of the league. Now some may see this as a good thing, which is fine. But dont deny its not there by picking out a couple of years from one club that suits your argument. Look at the trend across the league. This is the point...

Selective quoting of data? I put forward a fact to refute your statement "good one year, but can never seem to back it up". Brisbane were the best in 2011. They backed it up the next season (good signings and good coaching). They then feel off the pace (bad signings and average coaching). They then rectified the problem and backed it up again (good signings and good coaching). They are now suffering a down period (bad signings). Continued success in a salary capped league is difficult - certainly more so than in an uncapped league (where a cashed up owner can simply spend as much money needed to buy the best players available). However the Roar has shown that sustained success is achievable.

And you're suffering an acute case of selective quoting of data. Go through every year of every club and the pattern is there to see. :) Good clubs turn bad, the league is designed that way. Dont deny that narrative, its how the league is set up! If not its a failed system.

Yes The Bear,we were found wanting badly under Ange, maybe the Bakries had a sense of foreboding regarding the ACL under Mike Mulvey also. Will be interesting to see when the new "Real Coach" takes over i.e. for maybe the whole or part of the ACL campaign.

Yep. It's been softly softly. Until now ;) I think we all new that Brfc was going to absolutely squashed come ACL. Even under AP poignantly.
