The Red Backs’ opening batsmen and Australian Test batsmen, Phil Hughes, has been rushed to hospital following a tragic blow to the head from a ‘bouncer’ during his sides Sheffield Shield match against the NSW Blues in Sydney.

UPDATE: Phillip Hughes has tragically passed away.

The blow to the head saw Hughes collapse face first into the SCG pitch. He was attended to by ground medical staff for 15 minutes before a rescue helicopter arrived at the ground to rush him to hospital.

Hughes is believed to be in a highly critical condition, having required CPR and reportedly entering cardiac arrest.

The thoughts and wishes of family, fans and friends came in thick and fast for the man tipped as a potential candidate to replace Michael Clarke in the Australian Test squad, in the wake of the incident.

Hughes remains one of Australia’s future hopes for Test selection, often touted as one of the finest natural batsmen in the Australian system.

From 26 Tests for Australia he holds a batting average of 32.65 and a high score of 160.

Hughes left the crease at the SCG unbeaten on 63 as his side sat at 2/136 in the first innings.
