Ryan Harris unsure if he will play in the first Test

Australian fast bowler Ryan Harris admits he’s undecided whether he’ll play in the first Test against India next week as he deals with Phillip Hughes’ tragic death.

Harris returned to training with the Queensland Bulls in Brisbane on Tuesday for the first time since Hughes died from bouncer injuries last Thursday.

But the veteran conceded he would not know if he could don the baggy green again in Adelaide from next Tuesday until after attending Hughes’ funeral in Macksville on Wednesday.

“I am still thinking about it – I’m not sure,” said Harris of his availability.

“I will have to work it out when I get to Adelaide and see how we all feel.

“The boys who were there who witnessed what happened (in the Sheffield Shield game at the SCG where Hughes was struck), I can’t speak for them because I can’t imagine what they are going through.

“Tomorrow (the funeral) is the day we are thinking about.

“In the back of our mind is (next) Tuesday (first Test) and we have got to do what we can to try to prepare for that.”

Harris said returning to cricket had helped him after losing his mother Gai to lung cancer in 2006.

“Every individual is different. I have lost my mother before and I was pushed to play for my father and my brother and it probably helped,” he said.

“(And) keeping busy this morning has probably not allowed me to sit around and think about the funeral tomorrow.”
