How much is too much to pay for a supporter's jersey?

By Jake Rosengarten / Roar Guru

The producers of sporting paraphernalia have some explaining to do.

As sporting fans, we will do anything possible to show support to our team, regardless of the ironically huge hole it burns in the very pockets we spend hundreds on.

At the forefront of sporting apparel are the multi-billion dollar sporting giant Nike, as well as the likes of Adidas, whose ability to produce the most sought after fan-wear has seen them reach unparalleled popularity and profit.

However, a closer inspection of the prices Nike and closest competitor Adidas expect supporters to pay for these products is nothing short of ludicrous and almost forms the basis of some sort of cruel joke created by the rich businessman against Joe Everyman who just wants to support his or her favourite side in any way possible.

Let me give you an example: the cost of a Brisbane Broncos 2015 home jersey currently sits at a whopping $180 AUD! At this point one is drawn to question whether or not the entire population of Brisbane consists of millionaires.

Contrastingly, the home strip of the recent Asian Champions League champions, the Western Sydney Wanderers (also a Nike branded jersey) would set any budding fan back a comparatively meagre $90 AUD.

So what is it about the Broncos’ jersey that makes it worth double that of the Wanderers’? Is there more demand? Is it lined with solid gold?

The only characteristic boasted by the Broncos jersey but not by that of the Wanderers is that it is a “high quality garment,” which leaves me asking that perhaps people shouldn’t be paying 90 bucks for an A-league kit which isn’t high quality?

All I can say is that manufacturers who charge exorbitant fees for similar apparel certainly have some explaining to do.

How much would you happily spend on your team’s kit? How much is too much? And is there ever a price we wouldn’t pay to support our favourite teams?

I'd pay $60 maximum. If they want more money then they should play more matches. Earn the money! Get off your butts and off the beer, RL players. 20 teams in the comp, play each other twice. That's 38 games, 19 home games. 10 month comp. That would be a real sport.

At $50 I'd still be waiting for the price to come down -- or at least including a bonus set of steak knives with club insignia.

The worst part is each side has about four different jersey's, marketed as 'special editions', which are produced in order to capatilise on fans who are eager to support their clubs. An example of this was the Marvel Heroes jerseys. Then at the end of the season, each jersey is cut to $50, and another design is brought out the following year. It really diminishes the value of tradition and meaning in the jersey.

Aussies are so used to getting ripped off, it's quite funny reading some people on here trying to justify getting ripped off

The retailers charge them at exorbitant prices in Australia in season for what are over priced t-shirts. I got a new release provincial rugby jersey here for €45. The jerseys and rest of the merchandise fly off the shelf here. There is a culture of actually attending matches so supporters wear their team kit and it's a way of striking up conversation at the pub before and after the game. You get good quality jackets which are a neccessity due to the weather for the same price and they keep in condition for years. Premier League shirts are far more reasonable too even the new ones.

LOL, who actually buys NRL jerseys?! they are covered in ads and change every 2 years. NRL jerseys are the worst in the world. I think RL is a great sport...but those jerseys are a busy mish mash of yuck and ads. Give 20 kids some crayons and ask them to draw the Titans or Broncos jersey...noone will get close...noone knows what they look like. They are garbage chameleon things full of farkin ads :^(

Its a rip off. But teams do auction off player jerseys and there are good buys to be had. Find a player whose size comes closest to you and preferably a lesser known player or squad member if you want it cheap. Several of the Fremantle Dockers jerseys from the 2013 finals campaign went for between $45 and $60 in a club auction. Great value. They had even been washed (if used).

After witnessing a cracking game featuring Warrington and Wigan back in 2011, we decided to expand our wardrobe. From memory, a brand new, current season Wolves jersey, sold at the stadium, cost about 30-40 quid, or $50-$70. The point? That jersey was Australian made, shipped overseas and sold for about a third of the price a similar product would cost in its country of origin. Disgraceful.

Yeah and that's the other thing - there are any number of supporter tees, polos, sublimated tees, training tees that are all officially licensed and all <$50. If you can afford the jumper, buy it. If not, get a supporter tee for $30 and still look the part. Fellow fans won't judge you based on how much your shirt cost.

...and that's not cost price. At the Knights store, I've seen jersey's on sale as cheap as $30 in past season's. Waiting till the end of the seaosn is a good choice for the regular jersey collector, but there is always the risk of missing the "Special jerseys".

I think the challenge in recent years for Titans fans has been the rapid change of jersey's due to the change of providers from Reebok-Adidas-BLK. Also Titans have move sooo far away from the original 2007 jersey in such a short time period, that the heritage of the club is not respected at all. There is no connection of what Titans squad wore in 07 compared to now, and it's a disgrace. The game experience is a completely different problem all together.

That argument is more circular than a Circle. 'The only reason they charge so much is because people will pay them.' You will note that even teams with a low supporter base still charge the same as teams with a high supporter base. look at these 2 examples https://premier.sportsubs.com.au/aleague/ccm/producttype/2/category/112 http://www.melbournevictoryshop.com.au/Victory/Players-Wear-41 Both home Jerseys are around the same in price + 10 dollars.

I bought myself and my son a couple of our teams jerseys for $50.00 each at Best and Less. They have the NRL and club logo on them and nothing else. We wear them to the games we go to and they do the job and look the part..

I've stopped buying as they have become too expensive to own one and as gifts for family members living overseas.

I was just trying to point out that a lot of people are doing it very tough. $90 might as well be $90,000 for a lot of Aussies, but you can probably get a coloured tee-shirt for under $10.00 to show support for your team at a game. I've got a national Union shirt that was given to me, but I was lucky enough to have a flag that fitted neatly over the sponsor's name. I had that sewn on for a few dollars.

As someone embedded in the industry I can tell you there's not a whole lot of profit in NRL jerseys, for a few reasons. As a few of you touched on, there are a lot of fingers in the pie. The manufacturer needs to recover the costs of making the garment (which isn't just in the materials and labour, but in the testing and marketing). The NRL and Clubs take their clip of the ticket - and rightfully so - before the retailer has to invest in them, store them, market them and sell them, all while still attempting to make some sort of margin (which, trust me, is often slim at the end when you have to clear all the unsold jerseys at below cost). Another reason NRL jerseys are generally more expensive than soccer jerseys are, as mentioned below, the weight of the fabric. The intensity and physicality of NRL is far greater than soccer and thus the garment needs to be a completely different compound and strength. Same principle applies with Rugby. The other reason NRL and Rugby jerseys in Australia are far more expensive than most other countries is, quite simply, economies of scale. How many Manchester United jerseys would sell each year as opposed to a Newcastle Knights or ACT Brumbies jersey? How many Spanish football jerseys, or even English Rugby jerseys, would sell each year as opposed to a Panthers jersey? While we like to think our codes are the be-all and -end-all of sport, we have to keep in mind we're a pretty small country and demand is not that high when you compare it to nations with 50 million + populations. The more you produce, the cheaper it gets. Basic economics. Look, at the end of the day, $160-180 is a lot of money for a shirt. I understand that. But if that $180 is helping my team pay the bills, helping the NRL produce a better product week-in, week-out and supporting a manufacturer who has invested in my team - then it's a small price to pay.

To build a brand you need consistency in product. You don't get a different coloured Big Mac at every store you go to. I Particularly like turning on the TV and knowing who is playing by seeing colours and designs I recignise. I do think melb and tigers made a good move with the sleeveless 9's as this is a jersey that could be multi purpose. I could use this running etc. In regards to the topic I thinks the price is too much but then Im also the type of customer that's happy to get my gear at best n less for cheaper. I just wish they designed their versions better.
