Strikers sneak home against Scorchers in BBL thriller

By Justin Chadwick / Wire

Tail-ender Adam Zampa was the hero as the Adelaide Strikers secured a dramatic one-wicket victory over the Perth Scorchers in Monday night’s BBL clash at the WACA Ground.

Chasing a modest 147 for victory, Adelaide were in big trouble after Scorchers paceman Jason Behrendorff claimed the prized wickets of Tim Ludeman (17), Craig Simmons (12), Kieron Pollard (15) and Johan Botha (4).

The Strikers needed eight runs off the final over with just two wickets in hand.

And when Kane Richardson was run out, the equation became seven runs needed off three balls.

Zampa released the pressure valve with a big six over mid-wicket, and the 22-year-old was celebrating the next ball when paceman Yasir Arafat bowled an above-the-waist full toss.

Just one over earlier, the Scorchers were adamant Zampa should have been given out for caught behind when he was yet to score.

But with luck on his side, Zampa made the most of his life to score the winning runs in just his 11th T20 match.

Evergreen veteran Brad Hodge also played a key role in the win with a composed 42 off 36 balls.

Behrendorff finished with 4-22 off four overs in yet another sign he is ready to take the step onto the international stage.

Ludeman cracked an unbeaten 92 off 44 balls in last week’s trouncing of the Melbourne Stars.

The 27-year-old reached his half-century off just 18 balls in that match.

But against the Scorchers, Ludeman had just 13 runs to his name by the time he faced his 18th ball.

The Scorchers entered the match featuring just three of the players who played in last summer’s final win over the Hobart Hurricanes.

Opener Simon Katich (retired), Mitch Marsh (Test duties), Shaun Marsh (Test duties), Nathan Coulter-Nile (hamstring) and Brad Hogg (hamstring) were among the absentees, and it showed during the Scorchers’ faltering batting innings.

Michael Klinger smacked 49 off 33 balls and opener Marcus Harris chipped in with 26 off 19, but it was slow going after that.

New recruit Michael Carberry struggled to find his groove, with the Englishman playing and missing a host of times on the way to 27 off 35 balls.

At one point, Carberry’s bat went flying around 15 metres in the air to short fine leg after losing his grip on one wild swing.

Strikers paceman Kane Richardson finished with 3-31 off his four overs, while Trent Lawford (0-15 off three) and spinner Johan Botha (1-25 off four) kept the run rate down.

“When you restrict a team for 140-odd and are batting at 10, you don’t expect to get a hit. So to go out there and hit the winning runs is a pretty good feeling,” Zampa said.

“I was telling myself to keep my head still and connect with one. I’d missed about four or five. But luckily I got hold of one and it went over the fence.”

Behrendorff said the Scorchers were gutted to fall just short of the win.

“It was pretty heartbreaking to be honest,” Behrendorff said.

“We fought so hard and got into such a good position to win that game.

“But T20 cricket – one ball, one over can change the course of the game, and unfortunately we were on the wrong side of it.”

Arafat does bowl some good balls...but there are always 2 balls an over that are leg side or too full and they go the distance. His last over in the Champions Trophy when Chennai Super Kings needed about 10 off 2 balls and he bowled a waist high leg side no ball to Dhoni that went for six...followed by a half track slower ball that also went to the boundary. There is something very untrustworthy about the times he bowls his cannon fodder. That half volley to Zampa yesterday was the only way the Strikers could have won...so he bowled what they needed. In the Champions trophy both in his last 2 games his last over went for 21 and for 19. A pretender.

Carberry will do well I feel. It was simply not a good pitch for the batters.. they all struggled with skidding spinners and everyone was miss hitting the pace bowlers. Arafat bowled 3 absolute gems in that over if you were watching, he is good value. I still think getting Klinger was a major coup for the Scorchers, I miss him at the Strikers. Also.. Zampa seemed to be out gloving it head high to the keeper.. maybe they didn't pay it because it was a bit high I don't know.

How far below the standard of good Australian cricket is Michael Carberry? Far better to open with Agar and keep Carberry as the 12th man. Not bad in the field. As for Arafat...Cartwright is a better bowler and a way better bat. Play West Aussies and they'll win another title. Surely there is not a rule that demands we play sub-standard foreigners. Kim Hughes and Terry Alderman, in their sixties, would do better than those two.
