Luongo taking transfer talk in his stride

Socceroos revelation Massimo Luongo hasn’t had time to reflect on his Asian Cup campaign or consider the transfer talk.

The 22-year-old has emerged as the creative midfield force in Australia’s campaign and has surprised himself with his progress.

“I have gotten more out of it than I expected, I didn’t think I would play this many games,” Luongo said on Friday.

“I sort of just let it pass by me and worry about the next game … I will do it (reflect) after the tournament.”

Luongo’s stocks have risen so suddenly there’s chatter his third-tier English club Swindon Town are fielding offers for the Sydney native.

“I haven’t heard anything from them actually … I’m not worried about that; I’m just worried about here,” he said.

Luongo was considered a surprise selection for the Asian Cup opener but scored a goal and was man of the match.

His dash and daring have been increasingly important in Australia’s run to a semi-final in Newcastle next Tuesday.

“Every game I have grown a little bit and taken more responsibility,” he said.

“I’m playing game after game and figuring new things out in every game and it helps with my performance.”

Luongo said there were “loads” of differences in quality from league company in Swindon to the international stage.

“Playing in Swindon and getting on the ball countless number of times, I have a lot of moments where they’re game changers or little wow moments,” he said.

“Being here at international level, you probably only get one or two in a game and so I have got to make them count – if I don’t, then I have probably missed my chance of doing something special.”
