Match Preview

An Australian Open quarter-final birth beckons for Nick Kyrgios but he can ill-afford to underestimate Italian Andreas Seppi in the fourth round. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6.15pm AEDT.

Roger Federer’s defeat in the third round has opened up the draw significantly for either Seppi or Kyrgios to make huge inroads in the first grand slam of the year.

Seppi defied history to upset Federer in four sets and his confidence is at an all time high. The Italian is at the peak of his powers at the moment and will fancy his chances of upsetting local hope Kyrgios.

Every part of Seppi’s game at the moment is extremely solid. His forehand has become a major weapon and his movement around the court has improved significantly. As one of the real journeyman on the ATP tour, age has not wearied Seppi in the slightest.

While many will see the match-up against Seppi as favourable compared to facing Federer, Kyrgios will still need to produce his most complete performance of the tournament to seal a quarter-final birth.

The young Australian has impressed so far in the tournament despite concerns over his fitness but he will need to improve against a player that won’t leave anything in the tank tonight.

In terms of overall scalps so far, Seppi has undoubtedly achieved much more than Kyrgios given that he has overcome seeded players Jeremy Chardy and Federer to get to this stage.

Kyrgios on the other hand impressed with a four sets win over the seeded Ivo Karlovic but he is yet to face a real challenger for the title.

Although Kyrgios beat Seppi last year at the US Open, the Italian is playing at a higher level than what he was back at Flushing Meadows and will prove stern opposition for the Australian.

If Kyrgios can continue to serve at a high level, his aggressive game off the forehand and backhand side, should be enough for him to secure a tight victory.

Nick is Pat Rafter and Bernard is Mark Philipousis; that's the way I see both men's careers going.

Plenty of talent, just needs to temper his attitude, quit with the profanities and show some class.

I don't think I've ever seen a tennis crowd go off in a match like we saw at the Australian Open tonight. Extraordinary.
