Cowboys sign Cartwright as assistant coach

By News / Wire

North Queensland and the Gold Coast have completed an NRL coaching swap after the Cowboys signed John Cartwright on a one-year deal.

Cartwright will be Cowboys coach Paul Green’s deputy this season.

Cartwright stood down as Titans head coach in August, paving the way for his assistant and former North Queensland mentor Neil Henry to take over on the tourist strip.

Henry linked with the Titans after he was replaced by Green as Cowboys head coach in 2014.

Cartwright will officially start his new Cowboys stint on Tuesday.

“There’s no doubt John brings an outstanding coaching resume to the Cowboys,” Cowboys football manager Peter Parr said of Cartwright.

“His arrival is a huge boost for our club and gives us an outstanding coaching staff to take into the coming season.”

Cartwright was the Titans foundation coach from 2007 – a stint spanning almost 200 games.

He has also been assistant coach at the Kangaroos (2008), NSW (2004, 2011) and City Origin squads (2009-10).

The former secondrower also played 188 first grade games for Penrith including their inaugural grand final win in 1991, as well as 18 Tests and eight Origins.

I wouldn't say I was particularly stressed about the appointment as such. Just the fact that the Cowboys have a long history of signing -lets say - personnel who aren't quite at the top of the talent pool. Also there's the minor detail of adapting to life in the tropics. It isn't for everybody, as has been proven over the years.

Cartwright has a good track record as an assistant coach (if that's down to being in the right place or ability who knows), and he's there on a one year deal. Cowboys fans should probably relax a bit.

Is this true? Jesus wept. I thought we'd gotten away from signing deadwood and others discards. I hope greeny knows what he's doing with this one and keeps him on a short leash. I assume he'll be a forwards coach only. But why not sign gilly instead.

I thought they were getting away from signing dud coaches after Henry left, guess I was wrong.
