John Grant to resume role on Australia Rugby League Commission

By The Roar / Editor

Australian Rugby League Commissioners John Grant, Catherine Harris and Jeremy Sutcliffe have been given the green light to resume their roles for the 2015 NRL season, having been re-elected.

All three were Commissioners from the inaugural board set up in 2012, the trio have embraced their re-election on the commission, though fans might be less satisfied.

A poll run by the Daily Telegraph last year found only two in 10 fans were impressed with Grant’s achievements so far as Chairman of the Commission.

The only member of the Commission currently who wasn’t elected in 2012 is Dave Smith, who took over as CEO from David Gallop in 2013.

His re-election will see Grant take on the job as Chairman again.. Directors have to resign and stand for re-election at the end of each term in accordance with the ARLC’s constitution.

Mr Grant expressed his satisfaction at being re-elected to the Commission and said he was looking at the next phase of development for the game.

Mr Grant said the game had evolved both on and off the field since the Commission was formed three years ago.

“Sport and entertainment more broadly is undergoing significant change and the role of the Commission is to ensure the administration across all levels of Rugby League can meet the demands of being a modern professional sport in this competitive entertainment market,” he said.

“Our game is in good shape and has a healthy future and I look forward to continuing to work with all members of the Commission and others right across the game to make rugby league the strongest game it can be.”

Mr Grant was pleased with the re-election of Harris and Sutcliffe.

“Cathy and Jeremy have both made great contributions to the Commission in their first term and their decision to stand again and their subsequent election ensure their expertise and commitment continues to be applied for the good of the whole game,” he said.

Kingcowboy As I have stated it is about the strategy they are undertaking which is different to a decision. I do not think this is utter rubbish but a valid statement given what seems to be a top heavy approach to the administration of the game. You are stating that they are undertaking a massive undertaking in reforming the business. Fine but isn't that what I as a stakeholder asking for them to tell us about? The last I knew the fans are also stakeholders and as such we should know about the broader approach they intend on taking. Lets face it I spend money on Foxtel, tickets to the games and merchandise and it would be good to know that as a person with a vested interest in the game that the money generated from my activities is being spent wisely. As far as Grant goes his first decision was to give David Gallop the flick - well done look how soccer is moved forward under David's leadership.

This is great news. In regards to the extra salary, its all paid for. How much extra money is the arlc bringing in and increases these past two years plus more savings? In regards to staff then and now well a simple point that's overlooked conveniently is that if you are to increase your output and expand your operations and what you do, get done, in a day then you need more staff. And if you are going to move into new areas you may need to expand the administration and the departments within it. I also think the nrl is constantly checking performance of those areas and are making savings where they can, or putting more resources into them in accordance with the above. I also think they are strategically moving forward, and prudently expanding where needs and benefits serve best. I don't think the papers really lend that any weight. You can check out the season report and listen to what they say. They are not making silly decisions. No not everything works straight up but hello, that's their job. In terms of progress made its a great advancement on where we were a few years back.

The NRL is a business. Does the CEO and Chairman of the CBA have to explain every decision they make? Mr Smith and and Mr Grant have had a massive undertaking in reforming this business. Give the guys a break. They are going to be held accountable by the stakeholders but they need to be given time. The utter rubbish spewed by some fans is down right stupid

The commission is right it is the cast of thousands that is an issue at the moment. Somehow the NRL was run by David Gallop (on about $300k/year) and a few loyal staff members. David Smith comes in and we need 3 extra senior managers (some on as much as $700k) plus support staff to do essential the same job. Granted I do not know the strategies they are undertaking but David loses a lot of credibility if he does not explain the roles properly
