Philippe Coutinho coming of age at Anfield

Philippe Coutinho scored yet another world-class goal in what is seemingly becoming Groundhog Day at the end of each round of Premier League fixtures for Liverpool.

He scored a similar goal against Southampton last week to set Liverpool on their way to an important 2-0 victory at St Mary’s. This time around, however, he scored a similar goal against the defending champions – Manchester City – at home at Anfield. It turned out to be the winning goal and oh how the Liverpool fans rejoiced.

It doesn’t seem all that long ago that Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher jumped on Twitter and said that he didn’t mind Coutinho being left out of the starting side to face Real Madrid in the Champions League because, ‘he didn’t turn up for big games’. Well Carra my friend, you may just have to eat your words.

The man affectionately known by Liverpool supporters as the ‘magician’ has found his shooting boots this season in emphatic fashion. Since his arrival on Merseyside in January 2013 for a mere eight million pounds, fans have seen glimpses of what he could do, but it seems that this season is his breakout one.

He showed some great touches in pre-season, especially in the friendly with Borussia Dortmund, and now he seems to be going on to fulfil all of the promise that most have seen in this young Brazilian.

Whilst he stuttered through the start of the season, Coutinho has hit a rich vein of form since an important strike against Arsenal. He has scored three in the league – including that one – a fourth when you include yet another wonder strike against Bolton in the FA Cup fourth round replay and he has assisted four goals as well.

He might not yet be prolific but he is certainly putting his name firmly into Liverpool folklore with these important strikes.

Coutinho also seems to enjoy scoring against Manchester City as he scored the winner in a pulsating 3-2 victory at Anfield on Liverpool’s incredible run home last season.

His knack for scoring important goals at important times for his club shows that he is developing into some player and quite possibly a game changer, someone who Liverpool could arguably do with since the departure of fellow South American Luis Suarez.

If Coutinho can keep this kind of magic, match-breaking form up then Liverpool fans can expect a top four finish and a few more winning goals from the magician himself.
