Round 1 NRL action to cure off-season nightmares

By Jason Hosken / Roar Guru

You know the off-season is too long when vision of Braith Anasta selling hotdogs behind the Allianz Stadium in-goal wakes you in a cold sweat. So good riddance to disrupted nights, and welcome back rugby league.

Like most Roarers battling through the off season, I found the NRL integrity unit one sand hill too many – standing many orders of magnitude larger than Dave Taylor and proportionally just as unreliable, it remains an unscaleable beast best kept for the experts.

Nevertheless, the slap-stick that is the Titans and Arizona can be swept aside momentarily with further questions and advice best delivered in person from the concourse with flag in hand.

And with the turnstiles rapidly approaching, this is what has me queueing for a ticket and hiding the remote in Round 1.

A packed and heaving Suncorp Stadium ticks the box for top-shelf game one planning. The NRL’s best venue hosts two jet-lagged combatants under pressure for different reasons. The Rabbitohs should hold on, and with a strong list beyond their top 17 should dodge the trap all season, despite wearing the premiership’s ‘most wanted’ tag.

And hats off to Corey Parker who becomes the 21st player to join the exclusive 300 club, and ninth to complete the milestone at one club. It’s hard to believe the ever improving off-loading machine is the same shaven-headed tearaway who teamed with Carl Webb more than a decade ago.

But with the captaincy reins removed upon Wayne Bennett’s return, it remains to be seen if the perceived prickly relationship between the Red Hill favourite and one-time supercoach destabilises the Broncos’ finals quest.

My weekend ticket is in the away bay at Parramatta and just like the Sea Eagles I’ll be eager to brave the spine-tingling Parra chant and opening rapid-fire onslaught from Anthony Watmough’s new mound of angry ants.

Regardless of whether Daly Cherry-Evans and Kieran Foran front the Beach Boys beyond 2015, you know the blue and golds either side of the fence will be offering unwavering support and free facials. Manly will be sweating on the late inclusion of Steve Matai to guide the retort before Geoff Toovey’s veins pop amid joy or despair in a charismatic post-match return.

Saturday afternoon kick-starts the beloved triple-header, the catalyst for household segregation on many fronts. Take the tip couch kings – plan now and plan well.

The second game floats my boat, given the Titans were ambushed by the Sharks in similar scenes two years ago. Tipped to capitulate under ASADA’s slamming fist, Cronulla responded before a packed house of devoted fans. With the boot now on the other foot, the NRL won’t be worried about the Gold Coast’s performance against the Tigers as much as how many locals front in the club’s hour of need.

A poor turnout could sound the Titans’ death knell, creating the unfortunate break Bears fans are sweating on.

Despite not winning at home for almost a year, the Sharkies are short priced favourites to knock over the Raiders on Sunday evening. I’ll be interested to see how Josh Papalii fronts after a shortened off season following performances above expectation in the front row during Australia’s Four Nations campaign. Canberra are not without hope if the big unit returns to his edge-wrecking best, supplying a host of try-hungry outside backs.

Regardless of the result, Ricky Stuart’s post-match presser has the makings of a ratings winner, especially if his small men fail to deliver. The maligned coach is well within his rights to demand the NRL top-up the Raiders’ best offer to entice the competition’s number one playmaker to the Nation’s Capital.

And in what seems like weeks away, the rudderless Storm minus Cameron Smith travel to Jubilee Oval for Monday night football, where George Rose suits up for his fourth NRL club and third in as many seasons. Expect the big man to carry on his healthy early season offerings in a game that has the potential for another buzzer-beater finish on either account.

So with a keyboard of nerves off my chest, here’s to another season of mud, sweat and cheers.

can't wait till round 3 Brooky, always a heated evening. I'm still simmering over the golden point loss 2 years ago - Reynolds fooled everyone that night!

Nuuasala a great addition, if he can get in Papalli's ear then they'll be well placed. As mentioned in most places - biggest unknown is the halves. Cornish should be well placed after a taste last year but can he reach NRL standard. Always good to watch - how many Sunday arvo games have the Raiders got? I enjoy the Raiders playing in that timeslot.

I'm pumped to see the Raiders! Pack looks pretty good to me with Papali, Shillington, Vaughan and Nuuasala. A lot of size and aggression there.

I don't think the game is struggling, Nordburg. Sure there are unpleasant problems but they are not unique to league. Cash wise the game looks headed in the right direction and we've just had a successful series in the UK. NZ are on fire in growth terms and are 4 Nations champs. Far from glorified touch - blokes at +110kg colliding after 10m run ups is not for the weak. Rule changes such as banning the shoulder charge are for the games longevity. Thumbs up to rugby league - a few distracting headlines won't ruin my weekends.

The title to this story is part of the reason the game is struggling in my opinion.Just because the season kicks off doesn't mean all the ailments are gone. The NRL are like a man who has a lump on his testicles and refuses to go to a doctor because he thinks his hair is looking awesome so everything is fine. This is highlighted by their press release that the refs are no longer going to wear pink shirts. So the NRL will allow the game to slowly turn into a glorified game of Touch football but let's crack down on those pink shirts because a "study" reveals that it garners disrespect -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

Thanks JB. Ran out of room for a Doggies blurb. I shake my head when I see day games scheduled at Penrith in March. Hopefully it's not too hot and Penrith don't suit up in black. I wouldn't mind seeing my team front up against the Dogs dehydrated big men the following week.

Agree JC, Gold Coast will be around for a while yet. I just hope the area get behind the team, they still look strong on paper. For all the hard work it takes to arrive at the ground, it's worth it - a great facility that many clubs envy. I reckon the Raiders will have plenty of good days.

He certainly is entertaining. I think Hook is coaching or has some sort of advisory role in Mackay. I have no doubt he will be back amongst it in time. I don't think he was ready, or at least not ready for the Broncos. Maybe another club that can accept 8ths and 7ths and not really being competitive. Lots to be excited about in the coming season. The Sharks V Raiders game will be one of the most interesting of the weekend I think. To see where they both are. I also don't believe 1 poor crowd will be the death knell of the Titans. The NRL are into the Goldy for the long haul.

I'm glad Bennett is back home. He's good viewing even with mouth shut - gee, that doesn't sound right, I mean he's entertaining! What is Hook up to this year? Coote hasn't had a look in - injuries, unlucky. Agree, shame Petro couldn't play his career at the Broncos. Still, he did a massive job for the Panthers, a big part of where they are at today - I'm sure he'll look back with fond memories.

I don't think he is well liked enough in the playing group to be skipper. Hodges is a good choice. He has that arrogance about him and also fans of other teams hate him. Sometimes it is good to have a Captain that other teams really dislike. We had Locky and before that Webcke who were fairly well respected so I am happy with the Hodges decision. You won't hear one bad word about Wayne's choices this year from me because I have faith. I won't always agree but I know he knows better than I. There are good moves and bad moves in relation to transferring. Sometimes you can see players need to move, Jennings was a great example. Sometimes it back fires big time. Lachlan Coote and Martin Kennedy spring to mind. Even Petero. That was a real shame.

It is, especially for forwards. Parker a classic, has really matured. I like the way he has modified his game from the Carl Webb bash and barge days to a smart ball distributer with good vision. I'm sure he'll lead them out but it is a pity he isn't skipper given Hodgo's injury record. A lot is said about loyalty but often a move is in a players best interests. I can't imagine working with the same employer for 10-15 years...

Top tale. Go Broncos! Pretty amazing the 300 club has only 20 players. It is something special. Interesting that almost half the 300'ers are 1 club players. I wonder what that says about a players best long term interests...
