After a somewhat slow start to 2015, there’s finally some action on the domestic scene this weekend.

Three cards, although none of them televised, take place this weekend along the east coast with a number of 2012 Olympic and 2014 Commonwealth Games representatives in action.

March 6, Carlton, VIC
Zac Dunn versus Beibi Berrocal

The main event of a Barry Michael-promoted card this Friday is between young Victorian prospect Zac Dunn and former Colombian middleweight champion Beibi Berrocal in what is being billed as an eliminator for the IBO Super Middleweight title.

The title has been vacant since world rated Thomas Oosthuizen outgrew the division and moved to light heavyweight. Dunn was active through 2014, with five victories over various imported opponents. On paper Berrocal looks to have a solid punch with all of his 14 victories coming inside the distance.

On the undercard, American Fred Tukes, who now resides in Victoria, battles local boy Ben Capps in a ten-round junior middleweight rematch.

The two battled to a draw in December on the undercard of Dunn’s last outing. The New Zealand light heavyweight returns after his August stoppage loss against Vasily Lepikhin to face tough Samoan journeyman Togasilimai Letoa in an eight rounder, as well as third professional fights for the Maloney brothers.

Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Andrew faces experienced Phillipino Gerpaul Valero while Jason battles Alvin Bais, also from the Phillipines.

March 6, Bankstown, NSW
Ahmed Dib versus Sam Mawson, Val Borg versus Tom Ford

Billy Hussein promotes a show in Bankstown with a co-feature. Headlining the bout is a NSW Junior Middleweight title bout between Ahmed Dib and Sam Mawson.

This is Dib’s thirs defence of the title he won last year and he looked to extend his undefeated streak to 16. Mawson represents one of the tougher tests for Dib despite coming into the fight on the back of a two fight losing streak.

Mawson is a take on all comers type fighter, with both his recent losses coming against formidable foes.

On the undercard, former Australian lightweight champion and NSW amateur standout Val Borg takes on tough Thai fighter Tom Ford.

Borg emerged as a potential star, taking the Australian lightweight title via fourth round knockout over Dubbo’s Rob Toomey in August 2013, before being sensationally derailed by Filipino Joebert Delos Reyes with a single uppercut (one of the better domestic knockouts of 2014) in a fight that Borg was winning easily.

Ford is coming off a close ten-round decision loss in a war with Waylon Law.

The card also features 2014 Commonwealth Games representative Mark Lucas in his second professional fight, taking on overmatched Rezvan Khasmafkan in a four round middleweight contest. There is also an intriguing junior middleweight bout between Billy Hussein trained undefeated Giovanni Carpentri and undefeated Richard Smith in another four rounder.

March 7, Gold Coast,Queensland
Cameron Hammond versus Alex Ah Tong

2012 Olympian Cameron Hammond takes on underrated and tricky southpaw Alex Ah Tong, who is much better then his nine wins from 40 starts record suggests. Ah Tong upset highly regarded Ozan Craddock in July last year but was stopped by undefeated Rocky Jerkic in his last outing.

The undercard sees prospect Trent Broadhurst take on Irish journeyman ‘Sugar’ Joe Rea (who has shared the ring with world rated Martin Murray), the return of 2012 Olympian Damien Hooper from his first career loss taking on tough veteran Joel Bourke and former Australian junior champion Luke Travers in his second professional bout.
