Long-time world contender Daniel ‘The Rock’ Dawson suffered his second consecutive loss to junior middleweight prospect Glen Tapia on the undercard of Olympic champion Zou Shiming’s upset IBF world flyweight title loss to Amnat Ruenroeng in Macao, China.

Tapia, whose sole loss was to James Kirkland – who challenges Saul Alvarez in May – looked in a different class from Dawson, picking him apart with crisp punches during the first two rounds.

The end came midway through the third. Tapia nailed Dawson and rocked him before cornering him and finishing him off.

Considering the tough fights Dawson has given former world champions Austin Trout (dropping him twice en route to a unanimous decision loss in his last bout) and Daniel Geale, this is a huge win for Tapia.

For Dawson it’s unlikely he’ll feature on the world stage again anytime soon. He made the most of his fight with Trout with the knockdowns, which led to this fight, but this loss will send him back to domestic fights in Australia.

It wasn’t all bad news for Australian boxing, as Zac Dunn stopped Colombian Beibi Berrocal in two rounds in the final eliminator for a shot at the IBO super middleweight title. The stoppage was arguably premature but the two traded bombs for the approximately five-minute duration of the fight before Dunn landed an unanswered barrage to Berrocal in the corner.

To the referee’s defence Berrocal wasn’t responding and took some huge shots. A standing eight count isn’t a bad rule in professional boxing, and it was one that was used during Australia’s golden era of boxing through until the 1980s when TV Ringside disappeared off television. One standing eight count for a fighter who is in trouble but hasn’t hit the deck during the round is a perfectly logical rule, considering an eight count is given to a fallen fighter. Regardless, it’s a huge win for Dunn.

On the undercard, Ben Capps and Robert Berridge were both stoppage winners, while both Andrew Moloney and Jason Moloney moved to 3-0. Val Borg was also victorious by knockout over Thai fighter Tom Ford in his bout in Sydney.
