Roar young gun Borrello to keep firing: Young

By Laine Clark / Wire

As goalkeeper, Brisbane Roar’s Jamie Young hasn’t had too bad a view of teenage striker Brandon Borrello’s purple patch.

But a closer look at his teammate off the field has convinced Young that the Roar young gun can maintain his stellar form.

Brisbane are back in the A-League’s top six after Borrello sealed Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers – his second matchwinning goal in five days.

“The test will be to maintain that (form) over a period of time,” said Young, who has stepped up for No.1 keeper Michael Theo (groin) in the past two games.

“But I think he is wise enough to have the patience – and you can see the talent that he has got.”

Young said he had a better insight than most on the youngster ahead of what looms as Borrello’s biggest test yet – Sunday’s away clash with third-placed Sydney FC.

“I have roomed with him the last couple of weeks,” he said.

“He’s actually a pretty grounded kid for his age.

“He doesn’t get carried away, he doesn’t really have an ego.

“But he has a really good work ethic.

“And when you have all of those things you give yourself a chance – that’s showing at the moment.”

The Brisbane squad’s pecking order also keeps Borrello grounded.

Youngest members of the squad are assigned jobs and Borrello was seen pushing team luggage at the airport after his heroics sealed Brisbane’s first AFC Champions League win in Japan last Wednesday night.

Five wins in seven games since the Asian Cup break have moved Brisbane to sixth, with a game in hand over seventh-placed Melbourne City.

“At the moment the team is quite confident,” Young said.

“When you get results it breeds confidence and leads to more results.”

Fellow Roaries ... There is a petition for change and a new rectangular stadium in Brisbane. To get attention the campaign needs e-signatures - will you help? The background: The Gold Coast - 1 team, 1 stadium costing $200m Townsville - 1 team, 1 perfectly good stadium, $100m allocated by the state to build a new one Brisbane - 5 teams (NRL, AFL, HAL, Reds, Cricket), potential for two more teams (HAL, NRL) and two stadiums and no more planned. Many believe Roar are poor relations at Lang Park after League, Union and Concerts and that's understandable; it is a commercial entity so Roar take our place in the pecking order. I think we deserve better and the city of Brisbane deserves better. And I'm not alone, The Den are United on this. See the following story: http://www.fourfourtwo.com/au/news/second-class-tenants-roar-fans-demand-action So if you're happy with the status quo do nothing but if you're not, if you think this City and this club is deserving of something better (they're going to spend $100m in Townsville on a new stadium to replace the good one they've already got - lets get real on this, Football is being taken for a mug!!) then sign the petition and share it with your mates! The petition is at: https://www.change.org/p/queensland-government-brisbane-city-council-build-a-second-rectangular-stadium-in-brisbane

I would assume so - the role was planned/announced way before last years grand final so presumably it's now part of the overall football departments structure.

Indeed. March will tell us all we need to know but right now it's hard to pick fault with the coaching staff. If they keep improving the performances and the results keep coming we're in it as an outside bet this season and in a good place for next season.

Fair point, I was being flippant so interesting to see your observations.

I disagree with you there Waz, when Rado left Sydney, our results went down, it was only after some re-jigging in playing style (more Arnold style & personnel during Asian break, that Sydney's results improve. When Rado left Sydney, a couple of months before the Asian break, our results were poor. I rate him very highly as a coach, just not a no 1.

Towser - that is my understanding of the plan. In fact Roar management were very clear that would be happening it's only Theijjsen himself that keeps saying he would like the job full time. So he should take over as TD at the end of the season. But it then raises a new question - if Theijjsen takes us to the finals, form continues, gets us out of the ACL Group stage, crikey even wins the GF - what then? Would Theijssen be happy as TD or would we have wet his appetite and he applies for the vacant job at Mariners or (possibly) Jets? With Rados appointment there is a feeling (started from a story in the Courier Mail I believe) that with Rado coming in, Theijssen doing well, the other coaches being happy that maybe Roar were doing a "trial run" on a new coaching team led by Theijjsen. Before the AC break I would have said no way but now I'm not so sure, it just might be the right team??

Funny how Rado left Sydney and results improve, Rado arrives at Roar, results improve; Go Figure! The lessons of this season for Roar are clear - a good coaching team is as important as the starting XI and if Mulvey messed anything up it was tinkering unnecessarily with his back room staff and ruining teamwork there (I'm not sure Ron Smith can be blamed but that barbed tweet he made after we'd won at Wanderers may be indicative of his empathy for this club). So whoever takes over next, Theijssen or someone else, full consideration of all the current coaches is needed - Rado and Stead must have a place

So Bob or anybody else answer me this question if possible. Thijssen is the interim coach, so if we take that literally and the flash European coach replaces him at the end of this season, ,will Thijssen then take up the Football director(or whatever its called) position as an overseer of all football operations at the club.

Spot on Bob, the gap between NYL, NPL and A-League is causing clubs to look for surety in European journeymen, especially in the front third. It'd be beneficial for AUS football if this gap could be closed and we saw more Borrellos being given shot.

I agree with you, many of the players are responding to his individual coaching I suspect. Raises the question on a new head coach though doesn't it - if we bring in a flash European coach on a big contract will Rado fit in or will they want their own No. 2??

A decision on Petratos is needed however it doesn't have to be rushed, he may yet respond to coaching and a similar decision made on Kaluderovic and it's quite possible we'll need either no new forwards or two come June. DeVere needs to be locked down on his contract as well. Satora will return home from loan at the end of this season so you would assume a midfielder is needed (Malik from Adelaide?) and possibly a new center back - North at 33 can't keep going for ever. The continued rumors on Lustica can't be ignored either and he may be off to Europe, so we may be due for a midfield overhaul in the off season.

We love you Rado. We do. Oh Rado we love you. With Mr Vidosic working behind the scenes our young blokes seem to keep getting better and better. Fantastic recruiter and phenomenal coach. Hoping to see a bit of Devante Clut and Kofi before the season's end. I'm thoroughly out of patience with Petratos. Lazy and selfish, offering nothing except infuriating evocations of a blond malingerer from our distant past.

Coming into the second half of this season I think there were question marks over all the forwards, but nearly 2 months in I'm thinking: Solorzano - has shown the form he's capable of, I would have been happy for him to leave af the end of the season now I'm excited here's here. Borrello - was for me a "gap filler" but now not only does he look to be part of the match day squad but also someone we can build the future of Roar with. Petratos - still huge question marks, all potential and no oomph at the moment. Needs to step up or move on by the seasons end Kaluderovic - too early to judge but looks promising enough. Henrique - carried us in the early part of the season but seems to have been carrying injuries since Adelaide (a). No doubt he is class, but I think Roar need to work out how to release him in the final third more and not on the half-way line So it's way early to be talking close season signings but unless there's a dramatic downturn in fortunes we're probably not in the market for a striker!?!

Bob - That is the "rough" in the diamond. There is little doubt his close ball skills and choice of "ball" to play have to be improved but they are "coachable"' factors and his progress should measure any application being made to those 2 essentials in the game. He is also being asked/allowed to do much more running than he should and to find out why is also a coaching task. We shall see. jb.

Franko - Roar and Borrello discussions aside you correctly highlight a need to bridge the gap between junior soccer and HAL. It's a question for the FFA in key areas (like strikers) and is worthy of more coaching effort across all clubs - the answer can not be just to throw young talent into the HAL to see if they sink or swim.
