Brookvale doesn't need a facelift, it needs a rebuild

There's even something for suburban grounds in the new stadium deal.

Like all the league diehards, I love to watch NRL games at the old suburban grounds. However, having watched Friday night’s match between Manly and Canterbury, there might be a problem.

The field was in a poor condition and there always complaints about the facilities and food pricing. This is not just at Brookvale Oval, it’s at most of Sydney’s suburban grounds.

The NSW government announced in 2014 that they would no longer fund the suburban grounds. To the traditionalists this is a bad idea. To the futurists this is a good idea.

But the suburban grounds give the games soul. Dave Smith wants to keep the suburban grounds, however they need to be fixed. Some grounds need to be completely knocked down and rebuilt.

The Sea Eagles want a million dollar upgrade of Brookvale Oval. But a complete rebuild is necessary. It is a public ground, but if Manly are going to keep playing rugby league here, this needs to change.

There should be a rebuild with a grandstand at each end, while still keeping the hill, and also upgrading the toilet, food and bar facilities. If they make the grandstands fairly large and wrap them around one side of the field, they can have a capacity of over 30,000, and still have some room down the end of the ground for a public park and decent sized parking lot and bus station.

These factors could lead to more supporters coming through the gates, more money from gate receipts and a better atmosphere for supporters travelling from Sydney and the rest of Australia.
