[VIDEO] Melbourne City vs Brisbane Roar highlights: A-League scores, blog

Melbourne City host Brisbane Roar at AAMI Park in a must-see match that could end the game of ‘ladder leapfrog’ between these two that started in Round 9. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:30pm (AEDT).

If the heat was on in these teams’ battle for the sixth and last spot in the A-League finals, then this clash is the boiling point.

In their previous match-up, in early December (Round 9), Melbourne City prevailed 1-0 thanks to an Aaron Mooy penalty. Since then, both sides have remained side-by-side on the ladder in sixth and seventh spot, often trading places round by round.

A win for City could spell the end of Brisbane’s title defence, with an eight-point gap seemingly too large for the Roar to haul back in five games.

Meanwhile, a win for Brisbane would tighten up the race for sixth spot, leaving them two points behind City with a game in hand. But with their heavy schedule and the unavailability of many key players, a victory for Frans Thijssen’s men seems unlikely.

The champions remain without Thomas Broich, Jade North, Henrique and Michael Theo through injury, while Matt McKay, Luke DeVere, James Donachie and Corey Brown are away on international duty.

This lack of quality and squad depth was drastically exposed on Wednesday night when Brisbane lost 4-1 at home to bottom side Western Sydney Wanderers.

With four of their starting defenders missing, the Roar were forced into pairing defensive midfielder Luke Brattan with left-sided defender Shane Stefanutto as makeshift centre-backs. The two struggled to adapt to their new positions as the Wanderers fired in four goals.

Brisbane will somehow have to shore up a leaky defence that has conceded 14 goals in four games if they are to have any chance of winning tonight.

Melbourne City will be keen to exploit this weak defence, especially with attacking trio Josh Kennedy, Harry Novillo and David Williams returning to their squad.

Star playmaker Aaron Mooy will be unavailable for City due to his call up to the Socceroos but City are not short on options to fill his place. Robert Koren and James Brown are both capable in central playmaking positions to partner Erik Paartalu in the middle of the park.

Brown in particular will be hoping that his match-winning goal against Sydney FC last Friday earns him a fifth start for the season.

A City win will complete a hat-trick of victories for John van’t Schip’s side over Brisbane this season, while the Roar will be out to prevent extending their losing streak to four.

Who would have thought at the start of this season that at this stage we would be seeing reigning champions Brisbane Roar and title-favourites Melbourne City desperately battling each other for the sixth spot in the finals?

It should be an exciting affair nonetheless.

Melbourne City 3 Brisbane Roar 1

This coach is a bit funny, using Brattan and Stefanutto as centre backs (leaving other good defenders off) in the match against WSW and having no change yesterday night in match against Mel City. Just do not understand why there was no change of players when B Roar was one goal down.

jb you are so right, the squad has shown its limitations and the last few games have highlighted the inability of some of these players. I do not intend to mention these players again because it is not their fault that the management signed them on and in some cases welcomed them back. Financially management has found itself inept in managing its player budget or other teams are rorting the system because teams like Adelaide, Melbourne Victory and Sydney seem to be able to have decent cover in all positions. Is the club paying too much for average (and underperforming) players? With the younger players like Borello and Clut the Roar appear to have some class but why do they wait till all seems lost before they play them in the first team? To my way of thinking Clut especially should have been getting cameo performances over the past twelve months to settle him in to the first team squad. There are others like him within our youngsters and we have deadwood keeping them out of the team. There is another area where the club is falling short and that is with its management of injuries and the general fitness requirements of the squad. Too many soft tissue injuries deplete the selection availability of some of the better performing players. Then we the fans and members are kept in the dark about the extent of any individuals injuries. Against City last night we were the better team in degrees of attractive football, however we had no real penetration in the final third. We conceded less fouls than the opposition, and for all of our possession we gave the ball away far too easily. The goal they scored was the result of a schoolboy defensive error by a fill in leftback ballwatching and other than that City's defence (and Roar's ineptitude) gave them the game. The only thing you can blame the coach for is not using his subs to try vary our approach but who did he have on the bench that was going to do that?

Lionheart - I feel for you but the inevitable is happening. If you don't have the players you won't win championships. That has been evident since day one of this season despite one or two performances that promised better but failed to deliver. You say Roar need a new coach,I will go a little further, they need 2 fullbacks,2 midfielders and 2 forwards if they are to match it with the Victory's and Adelaide's of the HAL.The HAL is our top professional league and if you want to participate in the finals, and as a result, games in Asia, then you had better make sure you have the players good enough to do just that. Many put forward the salary cap as a restriction on improving the team but that can only be accepted if all the players contracted under that salary cap can be classed as good enough to play in the highest company. Balancing salary cap usage against quality of contracted players is the job of club management and it is in this area that Roar have been found to be sadly wanting for there are those writing in to these columns that will name players who should not be playing at this level. So Lionheart,do not indict just the coach in this instance, for the problem goes much deeper than that, and it is not going to be solved simply by replacing one man. Cheers jb

Am I missing something, or do we need a new coach? Surely, after several buildups are squandered by a lack of finish by Petratos, Solórzano and others in such an important game where your team have had decent control for a large part of the game, you would give Abdrejic a go, the one forward who has shown some quality in front of goal recently? Does Frans need glasses or what? Did the Roar need something tweaked, someone to try to spark the team up in the final third? And where's the motivation? The forwards looked asleep a times, the half time dressing room looked like a morgue with its bare walls, no color or motivational words. No yelling from the technical area, just same old that went nowhere. That aside, apart from when they got into the final hired of the park near goal, I thought the Roar played well for a patched up side. But we desperately need a proper head coach. Now!

Big result goes City's way which almost seals their spot in the finals. Frustrating night for Brisbane who failed to create any decent chances on goal. Their heavy schedule and injuries/unavailabilities of key players obviously hurting them. City make it three wins in a row whilst Brisbane are consigned to a fourth defeat in four A-League games. Thank you for joining me here at The Roar.

Perhaps this is the result we need to make the club have a hard look at what they need to do for next year - but I agree, no finals at suncorp will just be weird. We have been spoiled.
