Wakefield woes: Keep the faith in James Webster

By Andy Sharpe / Roar Guru

It wasn’t a good weekend for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats. An 80-0 defeat at Warrington Wolves on Saturday afternoon came on the back of their Under-19s Academy team losing 74-0 at home against Hull FC on Friday night.

Wakefield have now lost eight successive Super League games after winning their opening two fixtures at Castleford Tigers and at home to Hull Kingston Rovers, and they have a paper thin squad that is crippled with injuries.

I have a huge amount of respect for their coach James Webster. He made his name as a player in the British game at my club, Hull Kingston Rovers, after he was brought over by our former coach Harvey Howard in 2005 from Parramatta Eels.

Webster actually took over as player-coach at Craven Park for nine games in 2005, acting as the bridge between the sacked Howard and the newly appointed Justin Morgan. We won all of those nine games, which included the National Rail Trophy victory over Super League bound Castleford Tigers and convinced Rovers fans that the club was on the up once again.

Webster was an excellent and hugely respected player for Rovers and he was one of the guiding lights in putting us back in the big time. He led us to victory in the 2006 National League grand final and into Super League in our first full season under Morgan and he also won the National League’s player of the year award.

As well as being a quality player he was an outstanding ambassador for the club and played a major part in consolidating our position in Super League as we avoided relegation in 2007.

However, there was always a nagging doubt in my mind that Webster would struggle long term in Super League as the players got bigger and faster. He had the skills and the brain to match it with the best but didn’t quite have the physical attributes needed to be a major success at the higher level.

Webster is a man of slight build but he had a winning attitude and mentality that rubbed off on the rest of the Rovers squad and his bravery and commitment compensated for his lack of size to a certain degree.

His time at Rovers ended due to a bad shoulder injury suffered against Leeds Rhinos early in 2008, and meant that the club had to go out looking for a new scrum half and Webster’s contract was paid off.

It was a sad end for a great servant who came to the club at a difficult time in our history and brought us back in to the top league after 12 years. Rovers signed Michael Dobson from Canberra Raiders and the rest is history. Dobson had the physical attributes that Webbo didn’t and was an instant hit at Craven Park and had five great years at the club.

Webster moved into coaching at Hull FC under Richard Agar, after a spell on the playing staff at the KC Stadium and back in the National Leagues at Widnes Vikings, and followed him to Wakefield before taking up the hot seat when Agar left the West Yorkshire outfit last year.

He had an immediate impact on the Wildcats and led them to wins over Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves in the second half of the year. Although they didn’t make the playoffs they improved a lot under his guidance and continued that form early this season before the injuries struck.

The recent competitive performance at Leeds Rhinos on Easter Monday was destroyed by the result at the Wolves last weekend and this week they go into a tricky Challenge Cup fifth round tie at home to Championship club Halifax – that is a game Webster really cannot afford to lose.

Wildcats chairman Michael Carter has come out this week and backed him but the fans are starting to grow restless and a loss to Halifax could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Webster did not help himself by saying this week that he was already concentrating on getting his squad fully fit for the Super 8’s split after 23 rounds and that his goal is simply to keep the Wildcats in Super League.

While that is undoubtedly the honest and realistic point of view, it would probably have been best to keep it in house. It’s another thing entirely to come out and say it in public – it will hardly entice fans through the gates for subsequent games if they know they mean nothing to the club. I am sure the season ticket holders and sponsors were not too enamoured with his public comments either.

I hope that Carter is true to his word and keeps his faith in Webster as I believe he is one of the outstanding young coaches in the British game today and, if he is given the time he needs and he gets all of his players back fully fit, the Wildcats will become competitive once again.

This Super League season has been one of the most competitive in its 20-year history and it would be a shame if one of the clubs is seen as an easy beat and guaranteed two points as London were last year.

Heavy defeats like the Wildcats suffered at the weekend and long losing streaks undermine what is a great competition in 2015, but I don’t think any other coach would be doing a much better job.

The Wildcats need to stay strong and keep the faith in Webster.

Steve, One of my friends is a Wakey fan and he tells me of the growing discontent - which is understandable. This is the first test of Webbo's coaching career and he needs to get the team pulled together and start coming out with the right words in public to give his supporters some encouragement. I firmly believe he has the ability to be a top coach. Good luck tonight against Halifax. Andy

Are you a secret Bradford fan??. Bradford will have the chance to earn the right in the Super 8's later in the year.

Nice article Andy and is an accurate history from my memory. I am a Wakefield season ticket holder and can back up your mention that we are not happy with the comments made, nor the recent performances. It is a tough sell from the club that most of the players are injured. I hear the reports from the other SL clubs and they have numerous injuries and key players out but they don't go on about it. As a lifelong Wakefield fan we are used to being underdogs and always written off. However we are also used to seeing some spirit in the players and effort making up for inferior skill compared to opposition. In recent weeks (Leeds match aside) we are not seeing that. At Warrington it was beyond awful and there was little indication of "effort" from any of the players, maybe Owen aside. As fans we can accept losing, especially against teams with larger budgets than us. What we can't accept is the players not looking interested or committed. SL players are fortunate enough to play at the highest level. You can bet your bottom dollar that the Halifax players will have a point to prove because many of them would love to play top flight rugby. Webster made a great start as coach and really had us on a roll. Things are tougher now and he has to demonstrate to us that he can show leadership in tough times. He's never coached in a losing run before. I agree that SL survival is our goal for this season. Like you say the message could have been presented differently.

Wakefield are a small cub that should be in the championship, replaced by Bradford

It means that the majority of the national media will not have even taken notice of the score - or even noticed it at all - most national newspapers do not have rugby league writers. The rugby league press took note but are understanding of the Wildcats situation and know that they are a competitive side when at full strength.

Does that mean the media over there are not into sticking knives into the code? Here, they look for anything to talk rubbish about it and an 80-0 scoreline would have everyone in a frenzy about the death of the game or some other such nonsense.

Chris Anderson actually signed for Hull KR and played 1 or 2 games for us before he was offered the Halifax player coach position and left. He won the League and Challenge Cup in successive years with Halifax - they had a great side - I remember Graham Eadie playing for them alongside Martin Bella and Paul Langmack.

To be fair SA, not a lot - I think people realise that Wakefield are really struggling with injuries at the moment and with a fully fit squad they are competitive, although obviously there fans were not happy. London were getting tonked last year with a fully fit squad.

Has there been much made of the 80-0 scoreline? I have noticed anything from here.

I remember Chris Anderson running out for Halifax and so the name just stuck with me. I've a big soft spot for any French team in Super League and I would love to see Catalan crowned premiers just for the potential good it could do for the game. (Though I'm sure a French victory would see people lamenting English rugby league as a result. You can't win with some!) As for the rest of the games, I remember when they made the draw and seeing Bradford v HKR and Leigh v Salford and thinking, oh, this could be interesting. Especially Bradford v HKR.

Thanks Andy. Well I hope the 80-0 doesn't result in prolonged negative media. That's the last thing SL and league in general needs. Heading off to a game now, hoping Manly score a much needed win otherwise we may have to make louder calls for Albert Kelly!!

It does Jason, Hull KR 6-84 Wigan on Easter Monday a couple of years ago brings back sleepless nights but also shows that it doesn't have to ruin a club. It will be really difficult for Leigh to even get into Super League I think - this weekends Challenge Cup tie against Salford will give us a better indication as to where they are at the moment because they are easily the best team in the Championship and although Salford are without Rangi Chase it will be a real test for Leigh this weekend. If they do get into Super League via the Super 8s later in the year they will have to invest heavily in a new squad - they have some good young players and maybe FuiFui could do a year in Super League but it is a much tougher competition than the Championship and a number of players that are making hay for them in the lower league will not cut it in Super League.

I've always had really good article hits to be fair and I also put all of my articles on my own blog and give them to a UK website as well. I think Wakey will be just too strong for Halifax - 'fax are part time an although Wakefield's confidence is low, I would expect them to get over the top of Halifax on strength and fitness alone, although it could be a tough afternoon. Bradford v. Hull KR and, especially, Leigh v. Salford are really interesting ties this weekend.

Toovey's mound in the shadow of Webster's snow capped mountain. Always hurts to see scores like 80-0. Super League has the ability to toss up a couple like it each season. Shame to see after Wakefield opened the season with 2 wins. Andy - can we expect Leigh to have more depth and a prolonged life at SL level?

My pleasure. I just hope the articles score enough hits to justify you writing them. By the way, I'm secretly hoping that Halifax beat Wakefield and that Huddersfield and Catalan play out a draw.
