Match result:

The Richmond Tigers have made it 8 straight wins against the Brisbane Lions with a 79 point win at the GABBA on Saturday night.

RICHMOND 21 11 137
BRISBANE 8 10 58

After being up by a point, early in the second quarter, Richmond would kick 17 of the last 21 goals of the match to smash the Lions.

Led by 4 goals to Jack Riewoldt, and 37 disposals to Trent Cotchin, the Tigers made amends for their loss to the Western Bulldogs last week.

In the first quarter, and a half of the second quarter, the match was close with the Lions working their way back from a 15 point deficit early on.

When Zorko kicked a goal on the quarter time siren, and Marco Paparone kicked a goal in the second term, the Lions were down by just one point.

What followed next was an onslaught by the Tigers as they dominated the match.

Four straight goals to end the half gave them a 24 point lead at the break as the midfield started to take control of the match.

It continued in the second half as the Tigers kicked three straight goals as Jack Riewoldt started to dominate in the forward line.

He would kick two of them to give them a 41 point lead a quarter of the way through the third term.

When Brisbane finally kicked a goal, with ten minutes to go in the third quarter, they had not scored a goal in almost a term and a half of football.

That won’t win you many AFL games, and it didn’t win them today’s match.

The Tigers would control the game after that point and run away with it in the final quarter.

They would kick 8 goals in the final quarter to run out 79 point winners.

One highlight for the Tigers would be their range of goal kickers. They had 12 goal kickers for the match.

They now go into their fourth round match against Melbourne with plenty of confidence after the win.

The task for Brisbane doesn’t get any easier when they face the West Coast Eagles at home on Sunday afternoon.

They will be hoping to turn around their season in the next few weeks. It hasn’t been a great start to the season for them and they are now 0-3 for the 2nd straight season.

Match preview:

The Richmond Tigers will be looking to continue their good record against Brisbane when they take on the Lions at the GABBA tonight. Join The Roar for a live blog of the action from 7:20pm AEDT.

Since 2004, when Brisbane made the Grand Final and lost to Port Adelaide, the Tigers have lost just one game to the Lions in 13 matches.

The record is 11 wins, one loss, and one draw in eleven years of matches between the two.

At the GABBA the record is even better for the Tigers with seven straight wins since 2004.

For some reason the Tigers play and match up really well with the Lions. They haven’t lost to the Lions since 2009 and the two teams played a famous draw in 2007.

Up by 13 points heading into the final quarter, the Lions would relinquish the lead, and be level with 1:43 to go in the match.

No team would be able to score in the final 103 seconds of the game and the two teams would have their first tie in matches between the clubs.

Both teams will be hoping that doesn’t happen today as both clubs attempt to bounce back from poor Round 2 matches with a win.

Richmond, for the second time in two years, were beaten by the Bulldogs at the MCG. Brisbane, who haven’t won a game all season, were smashed by the Kangaroos by 82 points at Etihad Stadium.
The Lions start to 2015 has been similar to 2014.

Last year they didn’t win a game until Round 6 when they faced the Saints in New Zealand. One of those five losses, in the opening five rounds, was against the Tigers in Brisbane.

They will be hoping to change that this year.

Heading into the match they have made four changes from last week’s team. Matt Leuenberger, Ryan Lester, and Zac O’Brien have been omitted.

Unfortunately for Michael Close he is out for the season after he ruptured his ACL on the artificial turf at Etihad Stadium.

He will be a loss to the Lions who are trying to search for a tall forward in the absence of Jonathon Brown.

Replacing them will be Brent Staker, James Aish, Harris Andrews and Darcy Gardiner. For Andrews it will be his debut in the AFL for the club. He becomes the 171st Brisbane Lion to debut for the club since 1997.

Richmond have also been busy at the selection table with three changes to its squad. Ricky Petterd, Dylan Grimes, and Kane Lambert, are all out with injuries.

Replacing them will be Chris Knights, Shane Edwards, and David Astbury. For Knights it will his first AFL match since 2013 when he tore the patella tendon in his right knee.

It is a remarkable return for the former Adelaide Crow.

This match tonight will be decided by the midfield. Both will be hurting after being smashed last week and will hope to respond by dominating the opposition.

Whoever wins that contest will come out on top in the overall match.

If the Lions are to win they will also have to stop Jack Riewoldt who averages two goals a game against Brisbane.

The loss of Tom Rockliff will also hurt the Lions as he averages 30 touches for them a game against the Tigers.

The record of Richmond is imposing against Brisbane and in a close match between the two that will become important.

Prediction: Richmond by 10 points.
