Jon Jones stripped of UFC title, Daniel Cormier to fight for belt

UFC superstar Jon Jones has officially been stripped of his UFC light heavyweight title and suspended, following a hit-and-run incident in New Mexico on Sunday morning.

The 27 year old now-former champion is being charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death or injury after he allegedly crashed his SUV into a pregnant women’s car.

The woman suffered a broken arm but did not sustain life threatening injuries.

The number one ranked pound-for-pound fighter handed himself into Albuquerque police after a warrant was issued before posting $2,500 bail and meeting with UFC president Dana White and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta.

White and Fertitta decided to strip Jones of his title belt and suspend him indefinitely.

The UFC released the following statement regarding Jones.

“UFC announced that it has suspended Jon Jones indefinitely and stripped him of the light heavyweight title as a result of violations of the organization’s Athlete Code of Conduct Policy. Jones was recently arrested in Albuquerque, N.M. on a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury. As a result of the charge and other violations of the Athlete Code of Conduct Policy, the organization (sic) believes it is best to allow Jones time to focus on his pending legal matters.

UFC feels strongly that its athletes must uphold certain standards both in and out of the Octagon. While there is disappointment in the recent charges, the organization remains supportive of Jones as he works through the legal process”.

Dana White went on to explain his decision in further detail on Fox Sports.

Number one contender Anthony Johnson will still get his shot at the UFC title, and will face number-three contender Daniel Cormier for the vacant light heavyweight title.

The fight becomes the new main event of UFC 187, on May 24 (Australian time).

Gustafsson got destroyed by Johnson and right now it looks like Cormier is the only contender at 205. No idea who to put my money on for it, but when (if) Jon comes back I expect him to just win his title back and continue dominating.

Yeah. Bit shocked that DC has had a crack next. I would've even thought Gus vs Johnson. Unless gus is busy with another fight or injury Hopefully Jones wakes up to himself

Unbelievable. Very stupid by Jones. Was looking forward to the Jones vs. Johnson fight. Not sure Cormier deserves to fight for the belt again after Jones beat him so easily.
