Jason Gillespie turns down Redbacks job

By News / Wire

Jason Gillespie has turned down offers to coach South Australia, but soon may get the chance to coach England.

Gillespie has opted to remain at Yorkshire, rejecting offers to coach the Redbacks.

The ex-Test paceman, who will coach Twenty20 outfit the Adelaide Strikers, is being touted as a potential replacement for England’s Peter Moores, under pressure with a 1-1 Test series draw in the West Indies following failure to get out of the World Cup group stage.

Gillespie is reportedly the No.1 target of Colin Graves, the new England and Wales Cricket Board chairman, to eventually replace Moores as England coach.

Graves appointed Gillespie at Headingley in 2011 in his former capacity as Yorkshire chairman.

The 40-year-old former fast bowler was wooed by SA Cricket Association (SACA) chiefs to return to his home state and coach the Redbacks.

“I let them (SACA) know that while I’m flattered by the interest shown, I have decided to not apply,” Gillespie told the Yorkshire Post.

“While the lure of moving back to Adelaide is there… I believe Yorkshire and the Strikers is the best fit for me at this stage of my coaching career.”

A panel featuring Australian great Adam Gilchrist and AFL legend coach David Parkin are searching for a new Redbacks coach following the split with Darren Berry, who departed after the Redbacks finished last for the fifth time in six Sheffield Shield seasons.

The panel is believed to have a short-list of candidates, with interviews taking place within days.

lol, indeed. Whoever is appointed will have a tough year if none of the youngsters they are putting faith in step up.. especially the captain. He already has a reputation as a double figure wonder, I like him, and his style.. but he needs to get a couple of big centuries to prove he has the edge. Smith and Ross showed composure in BBL.. but were pretty forgettable in the shield this year. If Sayers is fit we should have a better season this time around, Zampa is zamping things up. One more thing, I've been disappointed with Ludeman's batting, he did get a shield century last year but needs to get some more dogged innings on the board, being not old, but up the ladder of age from all the youngsters.
