Eddie McGuire in hot water again over Adam Goodes

By Roger Vaughan / Wire

Eddie McGuire has angrily denied calling Adam Goodes’ controversial AFL goal celebration violent or aggressive.

Two years after McGuire made his attempted “King Kong” joke about Goodes, the Collingwood president and prominent AFL commentator said he would call the Sydney star to ensure there was no misunderstanding.

McGuire was part of Fox Footy’s commentary team for the Friday night game between Sydney and Carlton.

Goodes has sparked plenty of debate for his second-term “war cry” celebration when he kicked a goal.

“We’ve never seen that (celebration) before and I don’t think we ever want to see it again to be perfectly honest, regardless of what it is,” McGuire said on air at half time.

Goodes said on Saturday morning that he felt sorry for McGuire if the celebration had offended him.

McGuire then went on Melbourne radio, telling SEN he was on Goodes’ side.

“The point I was making at one point was you don’t know the camera angles on these things,” McGuire said.

“So we were giving every possible opportunity for us to get to a point where we could listen to Adam, then we heard his point afterwards.

“Then we analysed it in the context of world sport and whether or not you should be making pseudo or direct political comment during a game of football.

“That’s all it was. To say that I was violently against it or that I thought it was violent or anything else is nonsense.”

Eddie is a boofhead!! That said,,the problem with the reporting of this incident, is it plays into the hands of that part of our community who loves to spout the mantra:- "Australia is a racist country"! They will always argue from the particular to the general to support their point. OK,some of the people who boo Adam are racists, some just don't like him,& some just boo for the fun of it. Equally some people may have been "alarmed" by his dance, some support him,but I would suggest the vast majority don't care, one way or another. We tend to get a bit precious about our game----there are many thousands of people, who don't know who Adam Goodes is,have never seen him play,& don't have a clue about his ethnicity. There ARE racists in this country, lots of them, but we are not 1960s Alabama,or Apartheid South Africa. A small part of a not very big footy crowd is a very small sample to base quite profound allegations about Australian society on.

"then we analysed it in the context of world sport" LOL. no one else cared about AFL's attacks on an indigenous player during indigenous round.

Surely we're past most of this now? Indigeneous footballers are a valued, skilled, exciting part of our great game. Most of us value their input on and off the field and abhor racial abuse. Michael Long has done so much and Saturday night's celebration of indegenous culture was fantastic. But you know what? Goodes is just a w@nker. I dont care whether he's black white green or purple. Or icelandic, greek, fijian or whatever. Its all about Goodsey. We recall the drama queen exploits along with the sniper and the diver and all the other maddening things he does on the field. He doesnt get booed because he's black or indigenous. He's booed IMO because of these exploits and if anyone has a crack at him then they must be racist. I look forward to his retirement at the end of the year when we can all move on. As for Eddie, has done enormous things for Collingwood rather than football in general but yeah he's a tosser too. A child of the sixties who grew up in the 70s where his views firmly remain. Comes across as patronising and a know-all. And definitely full of himself. Wish he could retire from view as well!

Eddie McGuire is one of the more passionate AFL supporters and I believe he genuinely supports Aboriginal Australia and the cause of reconciliation. But here lies the problem: it has to be on his terms. Generally, Australia is supportive of actions to correct historical tragedies from our history but (as with most other cultures that were brought to Australia), wants it to be on its own terms. As soon as anyone expresses their culture of difference, we go a bit mad and can't control ourselves. That's why McGuire thinks it's OK to have a bit of joke about Adam Goodes and King Kong (a few days after the 2013 incident at the MCG) – it's a casual racism that is unsophisticated, and explains why many of us think it was OK to have white people with Vegemite on their faces imitating the Black and White Minstrel show on Hey Hey It's Saturday a few years ago (ha ha, that was really funny wasn't it). Or calling an Aboriginal player an ape at an AFL match. Or booing Adam Goodes because he was the Australian Of The Year and spoke out about racism and highlights the plight of Indigenous people. A lot of people in Australia still don't 'get' it. We can't be too harsh, because if people don't know, they just don't know. But, we're all on a journey and hopefully we're all open to some learning. Imagine if this was 1960 – Goodes would have been banned from the game. Thankfully, there's a lot more education coming up in the primary schools and won't be such a problem in the coming years.

Swans fans will be all over this. They still haven't forgotten Eddie leading the charge to have the COLA removed and they'll jump at the chance to paint him as a racist.

Nobody does take him serious. He is a narrow-minded, racist, bigot who hates Adam Goodes.

He either said it or he didn't. Surely there's a transcript but since the author has put it in direct quotes I have no reason not to believe them.

Eddie is wise and insightful , and he articulates his considered thoughts exceptionally well. We, as a community, are better for the experience of listening to his commentary.... in fact, it is always a profound experience.

I'm tired of the fracas about Adam Goodes. Let him do whatever he wants when he kicks a goal as long as he keeps his shorts on. What is the problem? Why is the press blowing this garbage up as something way more important than it is? Just to sell newspapers I suppose - they must think their readers are fools. Move on. Get a life.

The networks think that when Eddie bends over the sun shines so he can say what he wants when he wants, whereas the fan in the stand gets ejected.
