‘The Natural Born Killer’ is back. Carlos Condit (30-8 MMA, 7-4 UFC) has made a successful return to the UFC’s Welterweight division, cementing his spot as the number four ranked 170-pound fighter in the world.

Condit squared off against Brazilian slugger Thiago Alves (21-10 MMA, 14-7 UFC), in the main event of UFC Fight Night 67 in Goiania, Brazil.

The bout ended due to a doctor’s stoppage after the end of the second round. Condit’s brutal kickboxing based attack left Alves’ face a bloody mess, and it appeared as though he suffered a broken nose. ‘Pitbull’ was deemed unfit to continue by the doctor, much to the dismay of the raucous Brazilian crowd.

In Thiago Alves, Condit faced the daunting challenge of returning to competition against one of the Welterweight division’s most dangerous strikers, in hostile foreign territory.

He was returning from a 15-month layoff after suffering a demoralising knee injury in a highly profiled bout with fellow contender Tyron Woodley, at UFC 171. In the opening round, Condit looked a little hesitant and was cautious to throw combinations, allowing Alves to pick him off with hard leg kicks.

In the second round, 31-year-old Condit returned to his vintage form as he moved swiftly and confidently around the octagon. The Jacksons MMA standout put together the sort of brutal and blistering combinations that have become a trademark of his prolific UFC career.

Alves remained game, and was well in the fight until Condit found his groove and started to work his range. Unfazed by the jeers of the notoriously patriotic Brazilian crowd, Condit was determined to finish the fight as he continuously moved forward, searching for the finish.

It looked like it may have come at the halfway point of the round, when Condit levelled Alves to the mat with some hard punches and elbows. The Brazilian showed incredible toughness and fought off the American’s relentless ground attack, fighting his way through strikes and submission attempts.

Once he got back to his feet, it looked like Alves was back in the fight as he rallied against the cries of his Brazilian faithful. However, he was quickly put back on the canvas via a swiftly executed Condit takedown. From there, The American maintained his relentless pressure until the end of the round.

After examining Alves, the doctor called an end to the fight.

The modern day UFC has a chaotic, carnival-like schedule, with fight fans being inundated by weekly fight cards. In this climate, it is easy for fighters to be forgotten and others to take their place in the consciousness of fans and the media.

With this performance, however, Condit ardently reminded the MMA world that he is one of the UFC’s elite and most exciting Welterweights, and plunged himself right back into title contention.

When asked who he would like to fight next, Condit declined to call for a title shot and responded in the manner that has made him an endearing favourite among UFC fans. “Whoever is an exciting fight, whoever the fans are excited for, I want to put on exciting fights.”
