The Chicago Blackhawks are Stanley Cup Champions once more, after a 2-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in Game 6 of the NHL Finals.

After 77 long years of waiting, the Blackhawks have finally delivered their city a Stanley Cup win on home soil.

But they were made to wait, not only by the Lightning, who pushed Chicago to their limits in a fascinatingly tight series, but by the weather – as the police-escorted trophy was held up by severe Illinois storms.

In another gripping affair, the Blackhawks eventually ground down the Lightning with defenseman and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Duncan Keith finding the back of the net off a deflection with two and a half minutes remaining in the second term.

Then, with 5:13 left in the game, superstar Patrick Kane, who had been goalless throughout the series, finally got on the scoreboard when Brad Richards found him on the end of a three on two rush to seal the championship.

“You think about how long the season has been, how close we were. It feels like every game of the series could have gone one way or another. It’s just a terrible feeling. I don’t know how to describe it. Listening to that [celebration on the ice while in the dressing room], it just makes you sick.”

It was the team’s third Stanley Cup in six years, but they hadn’t taken out the winning game at home since 1938.

The Blackhawks have proved once again that they are the best run franchise in the NHL, and to grind out a series win in such tight circumstances is a testament to their coaching, their character and their management.
