Reds signings that could push Liverpool back to the top

By Tyler Galea / Roar Rookie

The 2014-15 season for Liverpool was a little bit shaky. Coming off the back of a solid 2013-14 season which just saw Liverpool miss out on the league title, everyone expected Brendan Rodgers’ men to have a satisfying season in all competitions.

But a poor performance in the transfer window and obviously the loss of Luis Suarez to Barcelona saw Liverpool just fall short of a Champions League position.

If Liverpool are to be serious title contenders they should inject some youth into the club.

Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid)
A man who has really impressed in recent seasons. The 25-year-old has proved himself and has gotten that first choice right full-back position over Alvaro Arbeloa. With the recent purchase of Brazilian fullback Danilo for Real Madrid, however, Carvajal may be looking for an exit.

Liverpool are in desperate need for a first team quality full-back due to the departure of Glen Johnson. Although reports say that Liverpool are close to signing Nathaniel Clyne*, I don’t see this move happening and I believe Carvajal is a better option for Liverpool

Aiser Illarramendi
There are already rumours circulating about the young Spaniard joining the Reds this July. Illarramendi is in desperate need of some first team football and when you have a youngster like him it seems unfair to compare him with midfield legends like Luka Modric or Toni Kroos. I would expect to see a move for him this July and I am sure Liverpool are hot contenders.

Ciro Immobile
Although Liverpool have many strikers through the club, you cannot say any of them performed to an outstanding level last season. It makes sense why, Suarez’s boots were always going to be very hard to fill.

Ciro was up against Adrian Ramos, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and even at times Shinji Kagawa for Borussia Dortmund’s striker position and although seven goals and one assist is not highly praiseworthy, I would say it shows the young Italian has talent. I can see a possible deadly duo between Daniel Sturridge and Immobile.

*Editor’s note: Nathaniel Clyne to Liverpool has been confirmed

/2014 wasnt really a shaky season for liverpool, it was a pretty average season for them, since 09/10 season they have been 7th, 6th, 8th, 7th, 2nd, 6th. last season was not solid it was an aberration. liverpool need way more than 3 players to bring them back to the top.

Yep i disagree as well, Carvajal has more of a starting spot now, it could change come the signing of Danilo, but Carvajal is fgood enough to play for like a champions league quarter finalist team like Porto, and would be odd out at Liverpool. Illaramendi - who knows if switching clubs or switching leagues will help him, how do you know he will fit in? will Brendan roders even sign him now they have Firmino Immobile won't leave full stop, his first season at Borussia Drotmund and he did well. not having champions league wont change his decision whether he leaves the club or not, no rumours have been abound or transfer talk surrounding him has risen so this move seems very unlikely since i havent heard it from any official paper or sports website like Eurosport or Gazzetta Dello Sport. All these signging you have here are ones that look like you have pulled them out of a hat in the need to write an article.

Liverpool have a good opportunity to strategise their season in two parts, given the extremely difficult start to the season they will have. I am highly doubtful at how serious the club will take their Europa League campaign, but with the fixtures yet to be decided for that, this is Liverpool's season until November 14, when part one of their season ends: Stoke City (A) Bournemouth (H) Arsenal (A) West Ham (H) Man Utd (A) Norwich (H) Aston Villa (H) Everton (A) Tottenham (A) Southampton (H) Chelsea (A) Crystal Palace (H) Man City (A) That is 13 games there, which represents a third of the season, and which Liverpool travel to each of their main rivals for a top four spot, plus Stoke, who they lost to 6-1 only recently. I'd say that if Liverpool win five of their six home games, and draw the other (16 points), plus get two wins and two draws from their seven away fixtures (two wins at Everton and Spurs, draws at Stoke and United - 8 points), then that will leave the club 24 points after 13 games. It doesn't look mathematically good, but given that all the main rivals have to travel to Anfield in 2016, the club could be in a good position to catapult themselves to a top four spot. As a LFC fan, if the club is 24 points after 13 games, I'll be confident about their top four hopes. The signings so far look astute, but again, the question is still on whether top grade talent want to play for Liverpool. Firmino, Clyne and Milner look excellent signings, while both Ings and Origi will give striking options, but Liverpool need a striker that will make opposition defences fear them. With Sturridge out till September, their best option may be Benteke, but that's only if the formation has him at the crux of the attack, with Firmino, Coutinho and Lallana finding space around him. Otherwise, Liverpool must scout a forward that has the energy to make their own running.

I think 3-5th is going to be an absolute dog fight this season (OK more so than usual). I'm not a Liverpool fan but for some reason I think they'll come good in the second half of the season and get 4th at the expense of clubs like City (who I predict will struggle and sack Pellegini). My top 7: 1) Chelsea (85 Points) 2) United (80 Points) 3) Arsenal (78 Points) 4) Liverpool (76 Points) 5) ManCity (75 Points) 6) Everton (65 Points) 7) Spurs (60 Points)

Yeah I think that's on many people's minds, probably including poor Brendan. Funny thing is if that is the case, what happens if Xmas rolls around and he has them firing on all cylinders???

What makes Liverpool fans believe that any top tier player would even consider going to their club at the minute? The club has been living off past glories for way too long, to such an extent that even that is now wearing away. I can't see them being in the Champions League for at least five seasons, letting alone challenging for the title.

Don't think he needs to be top 2 but certainly top 4 by Xmas, the Klopp sabbatical is interesting. He get's a break and then picks and choses which Club he joins. I wonder if FSG have him ready to take over at Christmas ?

The only signing I am excited about as a fan is Firmino. It seems to be another transfer window of quantity over quality. For Liverpool to again miss the glaringly obvious like a top goal keeper and a top striker and instead bring in Danny Ings and now seemingly Christian Benteke as the top striker, and sign a 2nd choice championship level goal keeper says it all really. I see a finish no higher than 5th - 6th again.

That's pretty much set in stone I think, nothing short of coming 1st or 2nd would save Rogers from the chop come Xmas. Klopp's taken a sabbatical only until January, which is a bizarre thing for a manager to do unless there's something he knows is already waiting for him come that time.

Not a bad looking team, I too would be happy to nab Higuain as Sturridge can't be relied upon. Rodgers needs to get it right and quickly. I think FSG will give him until Christmas, if they struggle early on the chorus for " Klopp for the Kop " will be on.

Another transfer season, another case of Liverpool buying ten Commodores when they just need two Ferraris. Enjoy 6th-8th place again.

Agree AFKAP, none of their signings are coveted by the big boys. They've bought quantity rather than quality - again

That team has a very mid table look about it. Coutinho is a good player but needs support, Sturridge is also a excellent player if not injury prone, the rest would be squad players at any of the top 4 sides. Unfortunately another tough year for the once great Liverpool, shame for Rodgers as I think he is doing a good job for Liverpool. I have many Liverpool fans & they live in another reality.

I think we need more than just those players listed above. Carvajal wouldve been awesome but now that we have signed Clyne its not needed. Also I think our team lacks physicality so signing a bigger, strong CDM in the mould of matic would be better for us.

I disagree with all three players mentioned. We just announced Clyne which is great news for the club. Our midfield seems full with Milner,Henderson,Can and Allen competing for the places.I would welcome Illaramendi to Liverpool only if we sold Lucas. One striker i am dreaming at LFC is Napoli's Higuain.I would be over the moon if we could afford him by selling contract rebel Sterling to City for 50million pounds.More realistic targets would be Benteke,Rondon,Luiz Adriano...etc Mignolet Clyne Skrtel Sakho Moreno Milner Henderson Coutinho Firmino Higuain Sturridge YNWA
