An open letter to Bernard Tomic and Nick Kyrgios

By Sporting Tragic / Roar Pro

Dear Bernie and Special K,

When I was young I was taught two simple rules. Number one, the world owes you nothing. Number two, you are responsible for the image you present of yourself.

Simply put, my fellow Australians, it is time for you both to grow up and realise the two above points matter.

The way that both of you have carried yourselves at the most recent Wimbledon is beyond ridiculous. In fact, put simply it is downright disgusting.

Whether it’s been yelling at ballkids (seriously who yells at a kid about a towel not being brought quickly enough), or the disrespect shown to the umpires, we’ve had a gutful.

Australians love their sport. And, more than that, we’re a forgiving bunch. I’m the first to acknowledge that people can change. Lleyton Hewitt, Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke – hell even Jelena Dokic – have all had rocky patches in early part of their careers and have gone on to be much loved stars.

They carried on like pretentious idiots and they got hauled over the coals by the media and by the public – and they deserved to be.

Let me put it in simple terms. Representing Australia – your country – is a privilege, not a right. The sooner you learn that the better.

Now, I understand that tennis is an individualistic game. However, there is a level of nationalism associated with you every single time you walk out on the tennis court. You’ve got to be single-minded and that’s fine. But I draw the line at the events of the last 48 hours.

Bernard, for a long time you’ve had all the talent in the world. You should really be in the top 10 in the world now. You’re not purely because you whinge and moan about not having the support of Tennis Australia.

You want more funding for your younger sister – ranked 651 in the world currently. According to the WTA rankings, there are 27 Australian women ranked higher than Sara. Do they not deserve funding as well? Or, arguably more than your sister?

As for attacking Pat Rafter, one of the most respected individual Australian sportsman in my lifetime, that was just ridiculous. All it proved was that you are a ungracious loser – you chose to let out your steam straight after a tennis lesson from Novak Djokovic.

Nick, there’s so much I could say to you. I’m tempted to not bother because you are seemingly so arrogant that you don’t care what anybody says. More than that, you don’t even love tennis (your own words) so why are you bothering to do it for a full-time gig?

If you want to chase a basketball dream – go and do it, don’t moan to us about it. You’re being paid millions of dollars and living the dream. No one is denying that you have got unbelievable natural ability, that is clear for all to see.

You know, what you’re doing on the tennis court in your behaviour is nothing new. John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Hewitt and countless others have all gone through it. It’s not needed and it doesn’t add anything to your game. To an extent, they learnt from their mistakes.

But for goodness sake, fix it and fix it fast. My advice would be to look at your mate Thanasi Kokkinakis and the way he conducts himself, the way he is playing doubles with Lleyton, and most of all, his humble, quiet and unassuming nature.

Frankly at the moment I’d be quite happy for Australia to be represented by Hewitt, Kokkinakis, Sam Groth, Matthew Ebden, John Millman, James Duckworth and any others. And that’s just in the men’s competition.

If I had my choice at the moment neither of you would be representing Australia at the Davis Cup. Please, pull your heads in. Learn from your mistakes. Have a teeny tiny bit of humility and graciousness.

Sincerely,

A frustrated and sleep deprived Sporting Tragic.

I am hopeful that the ATP sanctions Kyrgios...his behaviour is totally unacceptable....he is a misogynist an should not be representing Australia in any way

Perfect Wynter. time to haul Tennis Australia over the coals the whole set up is Ludicrous. Maybe corrupt and lets hope this does open the investigation the no 1 player in Australia is asking for. Agreed their knee jerk reaction in banning him from Davus Cup just insinuates Bernard is right. MMM Where is the proof he li lying ? ( I am sure just about everyone in the Australian Tennis scene wants it too. ) of course other than those holding/using the money !

In Reply to FRUSTRATED AND SPORTS DEPRIVED SPORTING TRAGIC Firstly it is not a privilege to play for your country it is earned, with blisters ., long hours on court and a hell of a lot of hunger to win. Secondly , down right disgusting ? what telling a ball boy to hurry up ! Big deal , get over it , a player needs to get on with a point , has the edge so yes get him that towel. ! This guy on court hasn't trained 5 hours a day travelled endless miles, lost a heap of matches to worry about hurting the feelings of a ball boy. ! Ive seen people in many sports have a go at umpires etc. It is called the heat of the moment. DISGUSTING is the Bogan white bread middle class Australian sporting fan who sits on his moral high horse. Who takes the time to bag a 20 year old kid from his lounge room/computer , while this very kid has sacrificed his life to represent his country , his family his coaches Tennis Australia, while his mates have been out dating girls having a drink and basically growing up normally. Why is it no one cares why an AFL or Rugby player smacks another in the face . starts a fight and the usual carry on. Yet under individual pressure, no team mates to lean on with thousands staring at you , there is no room for a meltdown. Since when have sports people not been human, since when has sport been about sportsmanship, get this and get it clear it is all about money ? or have you happened to miss the evolving game of sport ? There is no white card in tennis to cool off with. It is dog eat dog and can go for 5 hours ! You try that mental concentration, stress and expectation in fromt of a crowd of rude booing sports fans, all being aired Live around the world. Ok say it, but this player doesn't and this one doesn't, well personally I find it refreshing, I like people who push to the edge, test the limits. jump out of planes. loved McEnroe and Safin and I found tennis BORING till this honest kid came along. warts and all. ( who says he likes, not loves tennis ) SO ! maybe he is a little more maybe balanced, maybe he like sport but will love a girl ! Let him tone it down, let him find his threshold, he is young. Shame saints do NO wrong I am cringing at the behavior and comments from people, especially Australians . who if were real sports lovers, might think to be more caring toward a young guy making mistakes but making a go of it. Going as far as naming who you think should play instead? Seriously that is TRAGIC, I do think you need some sleep, and I think you need some empathy, understanding and maybe even a little forgiveness but something tells me, you want blood, you want to see this young guy go down , not up ! It has been far more than embarrassing watching the reactions of people this week , and their vitriolic comments than it has been watching a few minutes of mis-directed frustration. So many adults still need to grow up and start being the role models.

I'm not a tennis player, nor an Aussie, but I still think the behaviour of those two is childish, selfish and embarrassment to their people, their industry and to their families. I don't include them in that list because they haven't earned yet.

It starts with junior tennis.. My youngest daughter started competition last year and on her first game the father from the other team screamed at the Mum umpiring that she had miscalled a call and went on to abuse her. l was horrified... parents from each team have to umpire the games and we were all terrified to umpire any game that this idiot's kid was playing. This father seriously thought his kid was some unbelievable talent and you could hear him on the sideline coaching his son. We ended up playing this team in the Grand Final and the father was cautioned before the game. We lost the final and l left feeling really sad about kid's sport today. You should not have to see this kind of aggression and bad sportsmanship in junior tennis but it is becoming more common. Parents living out their sporting regrets through their children and setting them up as bad sports of the future. What an honour it would be to play at Wimbledon and such a shame that these two cannot appreciate the opportunity and use their amazing tennis ability for good.

Could agree more with Tennis tragic's comments. These two childish, spoiled brats are an embarrassment to our great sporting nation.

Well, maybe Nick and Tom have not been properly schooled that tennis is a game for Gentlemen. They better. They should be compelled to watch themselves after each match they play and that should probably help them to change for the better. And one last thing: Nick, your back-bone is bending, out of your own making. Please learn to stand with a straightened back. Thanks. From a loved one.

Very poor article mate, you need to get your information sorted. Typical australian view on tennis, on how you guys complain and winge about Nick and Bernard. About how they did this or did that. You obviously know nothing about tennis or sport in general. E.g. you state Bernard should be in the top 10 by now, but he isn't because of his behaviour. Wow how wrong you are there. There is so much more pressure than you realise, how consistent you must be week in and week out at tournaments, cracking the top 10 is not a walk in the park. Bernard does have talent but it takes a special person to be in it. It doesn't happen over night and you typical australians think it's that easy. By the way nadal is 10 in the world right now and dimitrov is 11, so think about that before anything else. Now kyrgios you obviously are very against him and what he does. Well continue to be because he couldnt care less, actually I dont think he reads stuff like this from people like you because you're irrelevant to them. Kyrgios is young, one of a kind and different attitude to tennis which is great and fun to watch. He's an entertainer, I bet you anything he builds crowds and atmosphere. Not everyone can be like federer or nadal they are unqiue. Kygrios is himself, and whatever he's done isnt that bad compared to everyone else. Andy murray swears all the time on court, serena williams threatened that umpire at the us open. So take a look at that before everything else. They are young, embrace it and be happy that we have two guys that could potentially be very good in years to come.

Anyone that is interested a quick youtube search will bring multiple videos of Roger Federer and almost any other top player having long arguments with the umpires or misbehaving on court. Anyone that thinks Nick Kyrgios is the first or last or worst behaved on court knows nothing about tennis.

No. Just like i don't wonder why i don't like any top 40 songs. Just because it's the most popular opinion doesn't mean it's the best.

No excuses for him, i will just support him in the hope he does mature. fair enough i just hope you dont support/follow other sportspeople that have done equally or much worse things in their career. for me personally, i'm not going to stop supporting him because he acts like a 20 year old on court just like i won't stop supporting faulkner because he got caught drink driving even though what he did was reprehensible. I don't like the way kicks carries on sometimes and he certainly needs to mature however im not just going to write him off as a banker and take enjoyment from him losing like you are suggesting you will. as for the fact he would rather be a basketballer. As a junior my best sport was basketball, i played it the most and the highest rep honors i achieved in sport in was basketball. of all sports it was my best/only chance to be a pro. however if you had asked me then or now my favourite is cricket and i'd rather be a test cricketer but i had no chance of that happening. i hardly think its outrageous to think a professional athlete would rather play a different sport. He may never mature, in 12 months i will be happy to wipe the egg from my face if he shows no improvement in his behaviour until then however i will be disappointed by the amount of people writing him off.

Another bleeding heart who wants to see and encourage the continued sterilisation of the sporting arena. As for Kyrgios, if I had to answer the inane, totally ridiculous line of media questioning post match, I'd undoubtably show the same levels of disdain and contempt. Let the kid play tennis and find his own way, instead of contributing yet more tall poppy syndrome bile.

You have made matters much worse with your condescending and useless remarks. Maybe YOU should decide who should play and how they play tennis.

This is the worst article I have ever read. Typical people like you who read from the media reports about how Nick and Bernard are so bad, how they do this or do that. You don't have any clue about tennis. E.g. you wrote, Bernard should be in the top 10 by now is clear evidence to how much you don't know about tennis, such a typical Australian view on tennis. You think it's that easy to crack the top 10, how it should happen in one good tournament or one upset at a tournament, for example Bernard's win at wimbledon over Soderling. It takes time, it's such a difficult sport, it won't happen over night, there are so many quality players in front of Bernard, who he does have the potential of beating but it's still very difficult to crack that top 10. A lot of hardwork and consistency in tournaments and over time he will eventual be there, but it is difficult, by the way Nadal is 10 in the world and Dimitrov is 11, so umm think and research before you make accusations. Also just because Bernard made comments on TA doesn't distract him at all on his tennis. You say he moans to much, yeah really think about how that can effect his tennis. The guy couldn't care less, give him more credit. Now to nick, wow everything you said is completely stupid. Arrogant is what you call him, you say how it's not needed. Well it is, your wrong, it's good to change up this game of tennis, it's good to be different. Not everyone can be like Federer or Nadal, they can aspire to be, but they are unique. Let him be who he is and do what he wants. And he will because he doesn't read stupid things like this from people like you. He's an entertainer, it's fun to watch him play, its enjoyable, its always different. I reckon you should just leave him alone. There's too many reports on how he threw his racquet or got angry, ha doesn't everyone. E.g. andy murray swears all the time on court, serena williams had that outburst at the us open one year with the lines person. Man don't be like he's so bad, because he really isnt. They are both still very young, let them be who they are and eventually you will see how talented and how hard they work. In time you will appreciate. Also to conclude you said if it were up to you they shouldn't do davis cup. Well luckily it isn't up to someone like you who knows shit about sport and hard work. Australia is in the quater-finals for the first time in many years, and you're just going to get rid of our two best players because you think they are arrogant or not acting appropriately on court. Crazy man, get a life you absolute loser. You illiterate tool.

Tomic did not attack Pat Rafter in his speech “People think I’m at war with Pat Rafter. It’s not true. Pat is a nice guy." What he did say, was Pat Rafter has a job that Pat Rafter doesn't even understand. TO the extent that Tennis Australia keeps handing Pat Rafter a budget in which they don't tell him what to use it on. Instead of supporting his sister they instead used funds to attract eastern European prospects in the form of Daria Gavrilova and Ajla Tomljanovic. Alongside a lack of funding towards just Sara Tomic a number of Australian Prospects have been lured away due to a lack of support by Tennis Australia Akira Santillan and Brydan Klein are just a few in recent years. Instead of showing how his claims are false TA have just banned him in public and called them untrue without providing any evidence that they are false, nor are we likely to see any such evidence despite the fact they are a public institution. The answer lies in the fact that it was Bernard Tomic who made the claims and the majority of Australians dislike him so they'll get away without having to address these claims out of pure disregard for the person who made them. As for why he used this press conference from the very first round when he was asked about it he told the press he'd answer any questions the moment he was knocked out, until then he was focusing on Wimbledon. He was knocked out so he answered the questions. Meanwhile Nick Kyrgios isn't the first tennis player to dislike tennis. Agassi hated it for the majority of his career as did Safin.
