Anderson a 'clown' over beer blow-up: Hayden

By News / Wire

Matthew Hayden has called England quick Jimmy Anderson a “clown” over his public beer blow-up and the England fast bowler’s history of poor dressing room etiquette means the Australians shouldn’t feel compelled to share a pint with him.

Anderson caused a stir when he revealed Australia turned down England captain Alastair Cook’s offer to share a few beers in Cardiff following the home side’s crushing defeat in the first Ashes Test.

But Hayden said Anderson’s history of making private dressing room affairs public should be enough reason for the Aussies to avoid going there.

“It’s no surprise in this particular case that Jimmy Anderson has been the first to poke his head up and dive into the press and start to play that out in the media,” the former Australian opener told Triple M’s Merrick And Australia on Tuesday.

“Because this was the clown that was invited into our change room and then all of a sudden everything that he saw in that change room appeared in his book.

“The old saying that what happens on tour stays on tour is out the window.

“You’re at the start of a series and you’ve got someone like him in your dressing room or you’re in his room and everything that you say then shall and will be repeated.

“I just don’t think there is any sort of great requirement at this stage to go in.”

Hayden joined Peter Siddle in pointing out that the practice in recent years has been for teams to share a drink at the end of a series but not during.

“The tradition – just for clarity – is usually at the end of the series, that’s where is definitely happens,” Hayden said.

“During an actual tournament it rarely happens, not like the good old days.”

Anderson noted England and New Zealand had shared drinks, regardless of results, following both matches in their drawn 1-1 Test series earlier this year.

“We found that was quite an enjoyable thing, just to chew the fat after a hard Test. It didn’t matter whether we won or lost,” he said.

Honestly who cares about this issue. And I do find big mouth Hayden annoying. It's a shame the more likabke Aussie cricketers don't get more media coverage. But then the ones with brains would rather keep out of this rubbish I suspect.

doesnt this all seem rather childish though, like we are still in highschool. even hayden admits that it was the good old days when teams had a beer after every game, the nz team seem fine with it and even if it is gamesmanship from anderson why not call him on it and be grownups. it doesnt have to be official or anything but few guys have a beer in each others locker room sounds fun.

You're 'avin a laugh' JimmyB. Anderson is stirring like a first rate jerk. If I were Clarke I'd invite every England player in except this jerk once the series has been decided. Fair being fair, if I were the England captain I probably wouldn't let Warner in

Doubt there'd be many Australians who'd want to have a beer with jimmy anderson.

Go away and pursue the Hayden Way. (i.e: big note yourself and mention Queensland every three words) "the former Australian opener told Triple M": enough said.

If the Aussie cricketers had any ideas, they should have just said they don't like warm (Pommy) beer. Although compared to Aussie beer it is probably not that bad.

Jimmyb, the Aussie players think Anderson is a sook and a dobber and a coward when he bats. He's proven them correct once again.

Haydos apparently also called Damien Martyn "the biggest wanker on the planet".

If Jimmy wants to move on then why we would he go to the press with that story? I think Jimmy and the English team have no intention of moving on.

It seems to me that Anderson and the English team are trying to restart relations and leave history in the past, the Aussies clearly aren't interested in moving forward and seemingly want to dwell in the past. Incidentally, it's quite something for Hayden to have the gall to call somebody/anybody else a clown, I'm sure there's a picture of him next to the word in the dictionary.

How many beers would the Aussies have to drink before they started liking Jimmy Anderson?

Isn't it? Although we may be crediting the big unit with less cranial vacuum than first supposed. I admire both Haydos and Pup but I wouldn't trust either of them as far as I could throw them. All this sneering at Anderson is probably fair enough based on past interactions but at least he appears to be trying to leave out the histrionics.

Clarke recently denied Anderson's version of their "dressing room events", Hayden just had the chance to back him up on that, by calling Anderson a liar, but didn't, interesting.
