The Melbourne Rebels have bolstered their squad ahead of the 2016 Super Rugby season, signing ex-All Black and World Cup winner Adam Thompson from the Queensland Reds.

Thompson is a back rower but is also a very versatile player meaning he can play the loose forward role as well.

The Melbourne Rebels are a relatively young squad, and they impressed many people last season with seven wins and a chance to play finals.

Thompson will add experience to the Rebels for the coming season and that may become a huge factor because he will provide a cool head when there is a crucial play in the match.

There was an x-factor that motivated Thompson to move to Melbourne, with the Kiwi previously working with coach Zane Hilton. Thompson was reportedly delighted to be able to work under him again.

There are some great signs that Rebels fans should take note of.

Thompson won the tackle count in the Super Rugby this season and he has also got 21 tries to his name in Super Rugby. So Rebels fans should look at these stats and welcome the new man with open arms.

Thompson has made 31 appearances for the All Blacks and also made 83 appearances in Super Rugby with stints coming from the Highlanders and the Queensland Reds.
