Warner extradition to take five years: AG

Trinidad legal experts believe the extradition of former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner to the United States on corruption charges could take as long as five years to resolve.

Trinidad and Tobago’s attorney-general Garvin Nicholas received a US request for the extradition of Warner on Wednesday, telling reporters his office will evaluate the documents from the US Justice Department.

US prosecutors allege South Africa funnelled $US10 million ($A13.55 million) in 2008 to Warner and two other FIFA executives as payment for them supporting its successful bid to host the 2010 World Cup.

Football Federation Australia has also alleged Warner stole $500,000 from Australia’s failed 2022 World Cup bid, embezzling a payment made to CONCACAF for a centre of excellence.

FFA president Frank Lowy said in June that Australia’s $46 million bid for the tournament, which garnered just the single vote, was doomed from the start by dirty politics.

The Australian Federal Police are investigating the bid for irregularities.

Warner, currently out on bail, is resisting extradition on charges of racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering in the FIFA corruption case, as he feels he will not receive a fair trial in the US.
