Bromwich hit with biting charge

By News / Wire

Melbourne front-rower Jesse Bromwich is facing a lengthy ban after he was charged with biting by the NRL match review committee.

Bromwich was hit with a dangerous contract charge and has been referred directly to the NRL judiciary.

He was accused by St George Illawarra fullback Josh Dugan of biting down on his arm during the Storm’s 22-4 win on Saturday.

Dugan got up angrily and remonstrated with the on-field referees, pointing to his right arm where he was alleged to have been bitten.

Canterbury prop James Graham was rubbed out for 12 weeks for a similar incident in the 2012 grand final when he bit the Storm’s Billy Slater.

In 2007, Bulldogs forward Brad Morrin was suspended for eight weeks for biting on Parramatta’s Timana Tahu.

Meanwhile, Wests Tigers forward Martin Taupau is facing up to four weeks on the sideline for an ugly swinging arm on the Sydney Roosters’ James Maloney.

Taupau has been charged with grade three dangerous contact and will sit out three weeks with an early guilty plea and a month if found guilty.

Canterbury five-eighth Josh Reynolds is facing one to two weeks out for his hit on Cronulla’s Valentine Holmes.

Reynolds connected with the head and neck of Holmes as the youngster attempted a field goal in the dying stages of the Sharks’ win at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday.

It continues the former NSW pivot’s poor record at the judiciary with the fiery competitor being lumped with extra loading because of one prior similar offence and four non-similar offences in the last two years.

He can accept a one-game ban if he pleads guilty but could be rubbed out for a fortnight if found guilty.

Brisbane prop Adam Blair had been charged with a grade two shoulder charge on Gold Coast’s Kane Elgey and can accept a two-week ban with an early guilty plea but will miss three matches if he fights the charge and loses.

The often-maligned Blair has found form under master coach Wayne Bennett and his loss would be a big one with front-row partner Josh McGuire out for the rest of the year with an Achilles injury.

Newcastle playmaker Tyrone Roberts will be free to play this weekend with an early guilty plea to a dangerous throw charge.

Ditto. No decenct evidence of a chomp. Dugan should get a week for an anaconda choke

Just judging by the video footage I don't think there will be anything from it. Looks similar to the Corey Parker 'biting' incident from Origin. Will be surprised if the gets any games off.

Different penalties for different situations. Bromwich is alleged to have bitten the Duges' arm while said arm was being pushed into his face. Jammer got stuck into Billy's ear during a fight, it's not like Billy was mushing the side of his head into Graham's mouth during a tackle.

What, different penalties for different parts of the body bitten? Is there a sliding scale?

James Graham bit a player on the ea during a fight. Even if Bromwich did bite Dugan (I don't see a bite), it was during a tackle where Dugan's arm was applying pressure to his mouth/neck. Certainly not the same level of offence. BUT this is Melbourne, and we have to stop them winning another Premiership somehow...

I've watched the replay numerous times. It's hard to see Bromwich making any kind of movement with his jaw. To me, it looks like Dugan put so much pressure on his mouth when he was strangling his head that Bromwich's mouth was open and his arm has been on his teeth. They were 10 out and needed a penalty, so he has a whine. His arm was in the wrong place.

Well James Graham got 12 weeks for biting a Melbourne player. Lets hope there is some consistency in the penalties.

It seems players are following in Cameron Smith's footsteps in relation to your last point. If it's good enough for the Kangaroo's Captain it's good enough for them I guess.

Jessie, don't bite, you should have waited till you were unconscious from Dugans choke hold, then you would have got the penalty. Interesting were there bite marks? Did anyone inspect Dugans arm for same or was the video clear evidence of that or the actual incident? Anyway, what's going on this year, there appears to be alot more neck tackling and twisting and choke holds like Dugans on Bromich. Gotta put an end to it I say. In years gone by that would lead to a punch or a severe warning from the victim to his assailant.

Put your arm over my mouth and I'm going to bite it.

These players need to partake in a decent meal before games. Jesse was obviously concussed and thought that the tatts on Dugan's arm was a bowl of squid ink linguine. On a side note, how much of a bite can you take whilst wearing a mouthguard?
