When did race become political? I thought your race was social personal and human? Racism is politiacal and terribly unsavoury, and most people don't realise they're racist.
I am not labelling everyone a racist. I am, however, saying that many of the attempts to justify this behaviour reek of racism, whether people recognize it or not. How is it not closet racism to boo Goodes because he has the temerity to challenge bigots in the crowd, or to speak out about indigenous issues?
Standing up for yourself, your heritage and your people isn't "politics" - its a fundamental human right, and more important than any sport. If the spectators cant deal with it, the weakness is all theirs.
Very well articulated Billy Bob.
Northerner, I know that you mean well but you are wrong to throw everyone into the same basket and call them a racist and it's offensive of you to do so.
You don't know me, my background or what I think but you are labelling me. What gives you the right to label me?
I have some very good friends that are Anoriginal and they aren't happy with the way that Goodes has handled something's, Are they also racist?
Who is 'Australia in general'' exactly?
Is it one person with one mind, thought and belief system? Anyone that booes Goodes is now a racist according to Adam, the AFL and the media. That is an absurd notion.
Simple viewpoints for simple people I suppose.
Never try to categorise one race, religion etc as one entity because they aren't.
Anyone that boo's him from now is a racist in his eyes and in the eyes of the AFL and the media. That's the statement that they have all issued.
Very sad and dangerous when that happens.
It is not racist to think that Politics and Sport do not mix. For many fans , sport is an escape from the issues of everyday life , if people are irritated because goods wants to make Political statements then that is their right.
Northerner , I am not concerned about his aboriginality , my opinion is that Politics and Sport dont mix ...
....but clearly anyone who cannot stand up to some booing fans is hardly "strong minded"
Gee Pieman your resorting to personal insults speaks volumes about you ....you dont like booing Goodes but enjoy making silly and ungrounded accusations. What I know about the Haka is that it is a challenge that is thrown down to the OPPOSITION. It is not a silly tantrum aimed at inciting opposition fans.
No. Who needs to toughen up is a bunch of people who can't deal with someone standing up for aborigunal rights. This is the 21st century and the world has moved on. If they or you can't deal with a strong minded aboriginal man, then you all need to toughen up.
Absolutely correct and the next step may well be that he will retire ( as he probably would have anyway) and play the victim card by blaming someone else.
Ken , personally I don't like booing all. Nevertheless fans ARE allowed to boo players and umpires ... So until booing is prohibited , surely fans have a right to boo Goodes
Firstly, booing, full stop, is sad, juvenile behaviour - at best. Got no time for it, nor should any right-minded person. However, not agreeing that performing a threatening gesture to a mob of spectators, or using an Australia Day speech to call it 'Invasion Day' is the best way to talk about indigenous rights, is perfectly rational and does not make one a racist. It's up for discussion whether it will ultimately help or hinder Goodes on his commendable mission to raise awareness of indigenous issues, but expressing an opinion that one thinks it will probably hinder him (and others), does not make someone a racist. Taken a step further, booing him because they think he was an idiot/naïve/less than media savvy for doing these things, outs them for being an even bigger idiot, but doesn't make them a racist. It doesn't. Disagreeing with someone's actions does not make one a racist. Big, big difference, and misappropriating the term, like you have, is doing a great disservice to the cause of equal rights. I'm no apologist - these people who boo are most likely complete idiots and small minded sheep caught in a mob mentality.. But they're also people who are marginal, who need to be educated on how indigenous people in this country suffer exponentially more than the general population because of decades of failed programs and neglect. And these marginals are going to be pushed away if they are called racists at the drop of a hat. They will drop their bundle and not listen to reason and start to form more extreme views when people start telling them, 'you either support Goodes or you're a racist'. Mate, not everything is black and white.
Aw gee, what's the role of a captain when his team is administered hundreds of injections of an unknown substance in a bizarre off-site premise, the result of which brings the entire AFL into disrepute? Yep, Adam Goodes is just like that and more.

Who needs to toughen up is a man who has ( amongst other things) mixed politics with sport and cannot accept that some people dislike him for it .
